Aovertlslnz Mgr. iubscrintinnhigr. i i - THE MORI\ING GUARDIAN THURSDAY, APRIL T, 1904. SCHOOL SUPPORT IN MARITIME PROVINCES. The \Vestern Teachers' Association in a pwper issued to the ratepayers make some instructive and int, ere~tlng comparisons between the methods of at-hocl support in the three Maritime Provinces, based on the expenditure for education in the . year 1902. In the Provinces of Nova S.~otia and New Brunswick n large share of the cost of educa' tion is defrayed from the school districts and the county school funds. In Prince Eiward Island the bulk of the cost fall* directly upon the provincial treasury. It may also be observed that tho total expenditure for education in the larger Provinces is more liberal than it is in Prince Edward Island. ` What is paid for school support from all sources amounts in Nova Scotia to $1.98 per head of the population oi the Province, in New Brunswick to $1.30 per head, and in P. E. I-liand to $1.61 per head. But oi the $1 Gi per head here $1.23 is paid hy the Government direct, while the school districts p ty but. 38 cents per head. Our counties as such contribute nothing. In Nova Smtia, of thc $1.98 per head paid for education the Government pays 50 cents and the county funds and school districts torzether paid $1.42. In New Brunswick, ot the $1.80 per head of popul- ation paid for the support of education the Government pays 49 cents and che county funds and' school districts to- gether pay $1.31. It may be observed that in New Brunswick the contributions of the county school funds to the support of schools equals 30 cents per head of popul- ntion,no that the school districts alone pay about twice as much as the Govern- ment for the support ol’ schools. In no ‘case can a teacher draw a Government , grant in excess of what he receives from the district in which he teaches. W8 must. frankly express the opinion that our school districts treat their teachers very meanly in the matter ol supplements. It would he better for the ratepayers, better for the cau=e of education and lor all concerned it the school districts would contribute their fair share ol the teachers salary, as they do In almost. every civiliz- ed country. Our teachers' salaries are lar below what thcy ouizht to be, with the result that our best. teachers ure leaving ua from L__ `, I SIIMETHING T0 PUSH VVf~ have just received our first ship- men' of Baby Carriages and Go Carts.
