Yester- day trains were despatched from Tignish, Summerside, Cape Traverse, Georgetown and Souris, for the purpose of opening up the road for traffic to-day. A disaster by explosion cecurred here on Saturday, the most fatal in Canada's his tory, outside of British Columbia. A thrill of horror ; e-wades the Maritime Provinces. There were over ona buadired and fifteen lives lost, leaving tifty-one widuwa and une hundred and fifty-seven young chiidren, bereaved and left on peuple’s charity There were some eight huadred operatives working in the mine, The explosion was due to a blast by « careless miner who did not use eaough powder to remove the rock, aud the flame iguited the coal dust near by Many miners in that slope were instantly killed by falling timbers. The explosion cevurred in the easteru slope Afterdamp killed most vf the men, and all the horses in the pit were chuked to death by foui air. The scene at the mouth of the pit was terrible. A _ relief movement has been started all over Uanada. All Saturday night and Sunday other miners worked like heroes to reecue the injured. One man who dropped as though deaf on reaching the surface said he never experienced anything like the feeling when the after dump began to affect him. Another man saw two lads fallas they were running towards the surface, and he stooped to help them, but the damp came 6o near overpowering him, that he had to hurry and leave them to their sad fate.
