Last evening a brilliant heuse in the orcheswa seatg witnessed the first presentation ef Fast Lynne—and we must candidly admit that this drama m:.de an unqualified hit. The piece is of the ultra emotional order, and is tamiliar to our readers threugh Mrs. Wood's novel. That Miss Campbell, asthe heroine, was successful, is saying too little. She will contrast favorably with its greatest and original exponent, who is uow re- moved from the scene of her triumph. The piece appeals directly to the heart, and in| the audience ve observed stalwart men as well | as the gentler sex, suffused.in tears. Two calls before the curtain proved the hold she had Wpen the wadience. A.purse of 3150 is offered for competition to all stallions in the Maritime Provinces, tiiat have never beaten 2.40. It is expected that two stallions wiil enter for this race fron. New Brunswick, two from Nova Scotia, and possibly two from our own Pro vince. If five Stallions~—say Henry Baker, Flying Dutc))man, Messenger Boy, Vontitience and Genera! Wolfe start, it will be well worth seeing —a whole days sport in itself. Then there is another purse ef $100 offered for a ‘* free for al!” tret. This if filled, will be as interesting a3 the Stallion race. The trotting mare Empress, from Halifax, with a record of 2.34, Mr. A. Holmes Loekout, and Mr. Large’s Saco Boy are expected to be the con- testants for the purse. Horsemen in this Province have very favorable opinions of Saco Bey, and when in company with such rivals as Empress and Look Out, his speed will be truly tested. Two other races are on the pro- gramme, wl ich will give aspiring trotters a chance to come forward. We hepe the meet- ing wili be successful and pleasant. A Nova Scotia Tragedy. & DEFENSELESS WOMAN MURDERED AND THEN CREMATED. A tragedy of a particularly shocking nature was enacted in Annapolis Co., N.S., on Wednesday morning last. The victim was a girl supposed to bélong to Windsor, who left licr home a few days previously, ostensibly te visit Annapolis. Here she fell in with a man, named John Hill, of Bridgetown, who it is said seduced her and who is supposed to haye committed the deed, aided bya Frenchman named The- beau. The body of the woman was dis- eovered by a man named Armstrong who, in company with his two brothers, were taking in hay at Lake View. On going tg work the Messrs. Armstrong met Thebeau, and when they had been at work a short time they perceived a fire in a bush a short distance from their hay field. One of the young men went to put it out, and en ap- proachiny it he was terrified to observe the elbow o! a human protruding from a pile of smouldering brush ashes. He was scared at first, but mustering up his cour- age, he walked around the fire and was still furtier horrified on observing a pair of feet sticking out iu a ghastly manner from among the hot ashes. After informing his brothers of the horrible discovery he had made, he at once proceeded to the Lake) View House, a short distance off..
