March 20.- Joseph Lsbrie, 10. was severely burned in a heroic effort to save his mother and sisters here today. Bertha also made e. courageous st- tempt at rescue, only to be trapped by the flames herself. A fourth sister, Evelyn, saved herself when she jumped from an upstairs win- dow. The explosion in’ their home oc- I curred late today when Bertha, the j eldest daughter. is ssid to have poured gasoline into the kitchen stove. It is believed she mistook it for coal oil. Flames immediately enveloped the room and spread un- til the whole house was ablaze. The girl sacrificed her life in the hope of saving hcr mother, sick 1n bed upstairs, and her sisters. She dashed to the upper storey. only to be caught by the raging flames, perishing with the other three. Joseph was cutting wood in the yard when. the explosion occurred. Ho made a. heroic, but equally vain attempt to save the lives of the family. Seeing the smoke pouring from the doomed building, he rush- ed in but was beaten back by an in- femo which barred his hopes of reaching the trapped household. Suffering severe burns, he was tak- en to hospital at Sudbury, 100 miles south-west of here, by train tonight. The Ontario Forestry Branch hero and neighbors rallied to the scene of the fire, but were unable to quench the flames. Gogama. has no fire brigade. Late tonight the flames had died down, but no trace of the bodies had been found. He was found guilty of at- tempting by false billing to obtain the transportation of 5'10 bottles of beer into the United States. Pending an appeal from the con- viction and sentence, the one~time "big shov’ of the border cities liquor business was allowed his liberty on bail of $3,000. The appeal will be heard here on June ‘l. Mother And Son Burned‘ To Death PICTOU, Ont., Mar. 29.-George Thompson. 3, was burned to death and his mother, Mrs. Elmer Thomp- son, was seriously burned in a fire which destroyed their home just outside the city limits today. The blaze started when Marie Thomp- son, a daughter ,after cleaning clothes with gasoline, struck a match to light the gas stove in s room filled with fumes. Other mem- bers of the family escaped uninjur- ed. but the large frame home with ell its contents was burned to the ground.
