Germany (AP)-A ii-year-old pennlless German artist went on trial here Tuesday charged with taking medieval frescoes in a historic church and a cathedral. Lothar M els lta t. the artist. ago when he said he-was tired oi not getting credit for his talent. At the same time, he admitted forging paintings and selling them as valuable "old masters." Three others were implicated, Dietrich Fey. an art dealer. Dr. Bruno Fendrich. an architect. and Theo Dietrich. a fellow artist. in a pre-trial statement. Malakat declared Fey was commissioned to restore 15th century frescoes, al- most erased by age. which were uncovered in the Marienkircl-ie here after it was burned out by an Allied air raid. ' Fey hired Malskat and Dietrich as artists. After examining the frescoes the four decided that they had deteriorated too much to be restored. So brand new frescoes were painted on the walls. A similar job was done in the Schleawlg Cathedral. Malakat said.
