DEBL01S Fox Breeders and Fur Buyers OCTOBEI{__3_1,_1938 THE _ CHARILOTTIITOWN PAGE rrviz Cordial Greetings From His {Majesty} Representative _ (‘PATRON It affords me much pleasure to extend a cordial wel- come to the members and visitors attending the Ninth Annual Silver Fox Show, sponsored by the Silver Fox Ex- hibitors’ Association. _Aside from its educational and advertising value, I believe that the Annual Fox Show brings with it a spirit of pleasure, enthusiasm, and of satisfaction which is of in- estimable value to the rancher and to the dealer in furs, as well as a rich reward to the Fox Industry as a whole. The superiority of Prince Edward Island fox pelts has never been questioned and I understand that the Ex- hibition of this year will contain some of the finest ex- hibits ever seen. I trust that the Fox Show of I938 will achieve the success it deserves. - GEORGE D. DEBLOIS, Director LT._-COL. D. A. MACKINNON 1937 by Ira Oarr, Covehead. 7. Silver Fox Show started: For several years prior to 1929 there had been a. movement. among P.E.I. fox ranchers to nave a P.E.I. 10x show as there was none nearer rhan the Royal Winter Fair at Toronto at the time. 'l‘lrl.s show was avail- able w a limited munbez‘ o.’ breed- ers only because of the great ex- pense involved in exhibiting there. Major A. S. leobertson of Mer- maid and J. Walter Jones of Bun- bury, together with other interest- ed parties took the mutter in hand in the spring of 1929. The govern- ment was waited on and it was agreed to provide a number oi orittes. The Provincial Eixhibitlon Associ- ation (rfiored their building and grounds free cf charge. As the rc- sult of hard work of a strong com- mittee. everything was ready for the big show which was staged the latter part of October and the first week of November in 1929. It was a success although the facilihcs I02" judging were not, very suitable and spectators caught only a fleeting glimpse of the judging table. The next year a blllldillgZkIlOWTl as the Paton Pavilion, specially adapted for judging was built. It had accommodation for several hundred spectators. a proper _iirdg- lng table, and a neutral light dif-. directed above. F. Burke os Field Man, who has been in charge of o large number of Fox Study Clubs which were then organized. We Iiave found this organization of substantial bene- fit in drawing the ranchers together in a cooperative association, thereby stimulat- ing the industry to ci very great extent. The Government this year secured the serv- ices of Mr. George C. Bishop, on expert pathologist, who made on investigation for infernal parasites in the ranches of members of our Association. The rancher will thereby be given an opportunity to irrudicote these parasites from his ranch, and thus he will be saved considerable quantities of feed and be given on oppor- tunity to place on the judging tobIe ul the different exhibitions and field days o very much higher standard of silver fox than he otherwise would have Ircd. ».._.\\ 4-,. We were instrumental in bringing u number of corloods of fox feed and hov- ing it distributed to the ranchers at o lower price than they could hove obtained elsewhere. We Iiuve now engaged u number of field men who will, during the next month, visit ranches owned by members of our Association, grading their foxes for breeding purposes and tutooing some according to quality, so that anyone wishing to buy breeding stock may profit by the expert opinion of our field mun, Mr. Burke, and his associates in this work. We would earnestly osk the cooperation of oll ranchers in hastening this work of grading foxes for breeding purposes, as the ex- pense is considerable to the Government, and we wish the work done cis expedition! Iy as possible. i I i i I In closing, I wish to express our gratitude to the representatives of different Fur Pools, to the stuff of the Experimental Fox Station at Summerside, undIto out- standing ranchers throughout the Province who hove so materially assisted in mak- ing this undertaking of ours the phenomenal success that I believe it to be .
