The Panther Prints #6: Winey Intramura Basketball Finals By BILL McQUEEN The intramural basketball championships came to a close in the A-league with the Moosehead Hadders against Jason Kielly’s team. The Hadders became the 1996-7 A- league champs in a 80-72 victory over Jason Kelly's team. In B-league action Five Year Plan squared off against Alumni. FYP lost to 59-34 to A/umni in the first game The second game between FYP and Alumni was a bit closer but the result was the same- Alumni beat FYP 53-41 to become the B-league champs (Alumni had to beat FY? twice in order to win the title of the double elimination playoffs) The game between the Moosehead Hadders and Jason Kielly’s squad almost turned out to be a like the last playoff game between the two sides- high tempers and fists ready. The teams were closely matched and throughout the game they traded the lead. This final was the best of any intramural games I’ve seen this year. It was too bad that intensity level resulted in tension between the referee’s and players. Some of the outstanding player's in this game were Matt McQuiad, Robbie Stuart. Peter Lawlor for the Hadder'’s. Jason Kielly’s team kept it close with hard-work from James Johnson and some amazing passes from Jason MacDonald. In the B-league game the crowd consisted mostly of FYP fans. Members of the A/umni team offered bystanders cash to cheer for their side. A/umni. however, didn't need fans last Monday night, they had Duncan. The big man scored thirty points in addition to lots of blocked shots and offensive/ defensive boards. In the final game. although closer, /YP couldn t get the consistent shots they needed which resulted in their second loss. The playoff games before the final were interestingly enough much closer. The Corduroy Warriors lost by three to A/tumni, Dream Jeam went into overtime and lost to A/wmni, and the lowest seeded team in the playoffs (The Maulers) lost by three to A/umni in playoff action. The plavoffs this vear shows how close the teams were. The main difference in the B-league overall. however. was who dominated the paint- congrats to A/wmni squad. The intramural b-ball party at Piazza Joe's was pretty fun this year. I think the peanut fight was highlight of the night- oh yeah. there was a NCAA final on T.V. too. To wrap up the intramural b-ball here's a big thank you to Trish Little and Doug Newson for organizing 1t all this vear, also thanks to the referees- see ya there next season
