Lynch is to date the only outdoor showman who has grown up in the Maritime Provinces of Canada and confined his efforts to that territory. The Maritimsa- New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island-form Can- ada's sprawling coastal region. To the Bill Lynch Shows of Halifax. they offer 50,400 square miles on which dwell 1,200,000 people, long railroad hauls, devious interchanges. and not too much competition. Bill was born in Halifax in 1903.0! his early youth there is little to note. In the spring of 1925 Bill and the late Ray Rodgers framed a humble outfit that played the small vill- ages. Shows were transported in one baggage car. Bill had a. Merry- Clo-Rnound and Rodgers had a string ofconcessions. They dissolv- ed palrtnership, however. at the end of one season. Bill stuck to his Merry-Go-Round. added some concessions. and in 1928 took out 'a show similar: to the one he and Rodgers had the year previous. He continued to tra- vel in one car and to play the vill- ages. INDOOR CIRCUS VENTURE With the close of the toes season Bill took an indoor circus to New- foundland. But the carnival was still the principal claimant of his energies. Late in 193 he was play- ing still dates with a Merry-Go" Round, Ferris Wheel, Chai.r-O- Plane. three shows and a string of concessions, Then he tried something bigger. He bid for the rim I-laliiax Exhi- bition and got it. At that time (No- vember. line) he owned three rides and three shows. The contract call- ed for seven of each. Thru the win- ter and the following spring he saved. borrowed and bought. He opened on time and with the re- quired number of units. This brought Bill at the age of 26 into conflict with the veteran Ben Williams. Until 1929 the Glace Bay Barber, who had become an American showman, had been the undisputed carnival king of the Maritime fair circuit. After Bill had filled the Nova Scotia. fair date he and Williams met in a Halifax hotei.i-listorlans are agreed that there was much raising of voices. punctuated by the hanging of flats upon the table. Ben threatened. Bill was unmoved. Finally they agreed that young Lynch should stick to Nova Bcotia. and the Wil- liams should keep the New Bruns- wick fair circuit. The agreement was mutually respected until World War It put a temporary end to all big fairs. Ben died at home in Win- field. L. 1.. in 1913. RAIL AND WATER JUMP In 1035 the Lynch Shows went to Newfoundland. The return trip from the St. slohu's for the engage- ment at the Provincial Exhibition in Charlottetown, P. E. I.. is still regarded as some kind of transport record by the carnival fraternity everywhere. Shows tore down and loaded out of st. John's on a Thurs- day. Perhaps the Fair grounds may most aptly be described in the words of an elderly gentleman with whom your writer was con- veralng the other day. "That's where the old folks are carried to. and walk from. and where the lclda walk to. and are carried from." Yours truly took a stroll out to the grounds the other night just to see if there was any truth in the matter. and if he will be pardoned for making general as- sumptions from general cases. than he cannot but agree that the state- ment was correct. You know that boat aflalr out there for kids. Well whether you have noticed it or not, there is also a hole dug in the ground in the very near vicinity of those boats. At nrst. sight your writer thought it must have been caused by a lion at large, but the malr in charge of the small boats was quick to inform blrn that it was dvug at 11.30 on Monday night by four year old Jamie Kennedy to serve as a last stand in defence of his father Forbes Kennedy, who was using every faculty in his command to drag or coax the young fellow home .to bed. Stock car racing we leave to the big cities. Pushmoblle races or Soap Box Derbies are our medal- ty. The annual Soap Box Derby will be raced this year on Ga-llowa Hill the latter part of this month. Ford coupes and. Dodge i had to be rejected in past years because they were fresh off the assembly line. so don't make the same mistake this year fellows. The machines have to be of your own making. Of course if you need wheels and have to take them off the baby's carriage that is alright with us. although you might feel more than the heart warming of winning a trophy if you do that. This year trophies will be presented after the race to the winning drivers and mech- anics and also to the manufactur- ers of the best "job on wheels". Please notify the supervisor on any one. at the three city Pill!- grounda re your intention to race. Watch this paper and playground signs for date .of .eve.n.t. That is all. John's and suffered a blowdown an hour after opening. Rafittins lost them four days of the engage- ment. Aiterwarda they made expen- sea, paid the somewhat heavy tax levy and decided they had had enough. Bill established permanent guar- tsrs in Halifax in the winter of mm. From this base he usually operates a first and second show line in order to meet all commitments. The past season he had three units on the road.
