Lonesome people usually are un- happy. One may be alone and not lonesome. .and so not unhappy. But Lone swallow was alone and truly lonesome. There were no others of his kind left in the neigh- borhood. The big flock of which he had been a member had gone on toward the Land-of-always-summ. er. He had n left behind because 01 a was as in one wing. He couldn't keep up with the flock on such a long journey. and he was wise enough not in start. For days he had waited. hoping that that wing would get stronger. Now it really felt stronger. He was sure now that he could make the long Journey. but he didn't want to make it alone. He was young and never before had made that long flight. How was he to know where to go and where not to go? Nights were getting cool. The swallow folk do not like cold weather. This is because in cool weather few in- sects are flying. Day by day it be- came more and more difficult to find enough insects. and Lane Swallow worried more and more. Blueberries were gone. He had looked for them, but had found none. Had he been nearer the sea- coaet he might have found some bayberriee, or waxberries as they are called. The swallow folk like these. Lone Swallow did find it few seeds he could eat. but each morn- ing alter the cool night he began worrying as he hunted in vain for an early morning breakfast. only when jolly. round, bright Mr. Sun had climbed well up in the blue. blue sky did the few flying insects that were left begin to fly. So it was that Lone Swallow often breakfaeted late. "I must go and I don't want to go alone,” he told Peter Rabbit one morning. ”I wishw"he didn't finish that sentence. "Look!" cried Peter Rabbit," do you see what I see?" Lone Swallow did see what Peter see it. He began to twitter in happy ex- citment. Then he took in his swiii. wings. One after another they mrched on this wire twitter- ing iiappily. Sitting close together they made a long line. Lone Swallow flew to join them. He was in such ii hurry he didn't even say good-by to Peter Rabbit. Peter didn't mind. He was used to that sort of thing.
