It was so with a small libx. one ot the children or Roddy Fox. He was smart. men was no question about that. He was so apt that he was the first at Reddy's lively family to leave home and start out for himseli. He was very sure he could take care of himself. There wasnt a doubt in his small head. He had watched Father and Mother and learned how to hunt and find (God. To him that was the most important thing. I suspect that sometimes he thought he was even smarter than his father. Children are that way sometimes before they have learned how little they do know. The lively little Fox was over in the Green Forest. Let's analyze from nlng: West's opening bid was the iirst peculiar action-his hand was cer- tainly -under par. even in third position. Then, East's respcnse was at best questionable; he had a bet- ter pass, But these criticisms lose point when North's bidding tedi- nique is consider ii His pass over one heart could be justified on the basis of trapping, but when south showed the values for a double of one notrump, even though he had previously passed. it was incon- ceivable that North should not have passed for penalties! Perhaps North felt that by jumping in diamonds. he cculd ar- rive at some good game contract. but if this was his reasoning, it was pretty bad! It North-South could make game anywhere-what would ha" to the opposing one notrump! one thing was sure: South could not even be hoping thlt North had what he did have. and so, if south was willing to defend against one notrump, as his double indicated, North should have been highly enthusiastic about the thingi south could not be blamed ior falllns to respond to North's Jump f-Rkwut. North had not overcalled one heart, and he announced the "inability" to leave in the double of one notrump. lwhere, then, could Nort-h-south hope to make game? North actually made five-odd at diamonds, but this was not very satisiactory. considering that (East- west could have been held to two the begin- lurnsu asked the young Fox. Green Forest and Hist a very little way in. Now he was doing some- thing he had wanted to do tor a long time-venturing farther into the Green Forest. He was following the crooked Little Path that winds this way and that way among the trees wherever the going is easiest. Green Forest people always choose the easiest ways and that is why the paths they make are usually the easiest to follow. Now the smart little Fox was al- so ah-foolish little Fox. smart people, y'bu know. can be very fool- ish they are more foolish than others to be in the Green Forest at all because he was not at home here and he knew almost nothing or the people that live there and their ways. But he was enjoying himself. Like boys and girls, little Foxes and other little folks in fur like excitement. He was getting it. You see, there were many little turns in the Crooked Little Path and there was no knowing what might be waiting around'each turn. Being smart, he never ran around a turn; he always peeked around a certain turn that he discovered the strangest looking person he had ever seen. He was in the middle of the crooked Little Path. whining and grunting and complaining. which -was his way of expressing happiness. some folks are like that.
