Monrreuai, April 30.— The triple con- vocation for conferring degrees in the faculties of science, arts, and law, of McGill University, took place to-day in the Windsor | Hall, in the presence of two thousand spec- _ tators. have been held within the College walis—in On previous occasions these events the William Molson Hall—but this year the interest was so great and the attendance likely to be so large, that the largest public hail was sought out, and it proved itself not uearly equal to accommodate the many friends of McGill. His Excellency the Governor-General graced the proceedings with his presence, and amongst the Jadies of note were Lady Dawson, Lady Macdon- ald and Lady Smith. All the Governors of the University, the Principal, Chancelior, Professors and Fellows, the Judges of the Supreme Court, the Clergy of all denomi- nations, and a large body of graduates, all robed in appropriate costume, were in at- tendance. One prominent feature of the event was the notable place taken by those who are proud to acknowledge Prince E3- ward Island as their native place. Chief among these was Mr. W. C. McDonald, whose benefactions to McGill the past year sum up half a million dollars, devoted to the interests of Law, Arts and Science, but chiefly the latter. When the McDonald buildings are erected, the Science Depart- ment at McGill will be 4s strong as any in Europe or America. It will be of interest to note the place taker by students from the Island, as their names appeared from the convocation lists. First came Mr. R. S. Lea, of Victoria, who won the Lord Stanley gold medal, the special British Association prize of $30, the prize for best summary re- port on **Standpipes,” $25, prizes in theory of structures, hydraulics, steam and design- ing. The Dean announced that Mr. Lea had ettainea the highest marks that had ever been gained in the Science Faculty, and that he was first in every subject of the advanced and ordinary courses of Oivi! En- gineering. In‘the third year, Mr. E. A. Stone, gnother,Islander, stood first, winning the Scott Exhibition of $66. Prizes in Mathematical Physics, Descriptive Gen- metery, Theory of Structures, Surveying, Mathematics and Instrument Work. In the second year, Mr. Thomas MeLeod stood frst in Civil Engineering, and in the first year R. C. Holman took a high standing with first prize in Mathematics and Chem- istry. It will be remembered that Mr. A. W. Strong was gold medalist last year, with Mr. 3. P. Taplin second, and in 1888 Mr. RE. Palmer held q similar position. In the Faculty of Arts Mr. D. J. Fraser ob- tained first rank honors in Mental and Moral Philosophy, and had also the distinc- tion of reading the Validictory for his class. In the third yew Mr. H, N. Goff obtained first rank general standing, and in the first year Mr. John §. Gordon won the ‘prize for Hebrew and the special prise for the Mari- time Provinces, It is not too late to speak of same results in the Medical Faculty. The only Island graduate was A. C. Mc- Lellan, one of the strongest men of his class. Inthe thirdjyear Mr, J. A. McNeill B. A., obtained first-class honors in Medical Jurisprudence, Materi Medica, Therapeutics, and Pharmacology. Mr. E. J. Keir also pasged with credit. In the primary years, Messrs. A. J. McKinnon, D. A. Bruce, J. D. McJutyre, Dewar, McMillan, and Matheson occupied prominent places. ‘The success of these students is a matter uf comment, and brings additional credit to the Prince of Wales College, the visit of whose Principal. Dr. Anderson, to Montreal, is still talked of in Univerity circles. Whilst the subject is “islanders,” it will be proper te mention the success Mr. Robert Harris is meeting in the Art world. tiis portrait of Sir Joseph Hickson, for which he received a thousand dollars, is now on exhibition in the Royal Canadian Academy. He has also another picture, which anyone who knows Charlottetown wiil recognize as that of Connolly's wharf. -wwve —ouoCo* Dyspeptics Will Rejoice. (From Weekly Telegraph ) The attention of our readers is called to the advertisement of ~‘Dyspepticare,” which ap- pears for the first time in this paper to-day. Dyspepticure has been a houshold remedy in St. John for a number of years, and without any sort of aivertising has become familiarly known throughout the maritime provinces; that itis so well known is due to its wonder- fnl success in curing indigestion and chronic dyspepsia Mr Short has given close atiention to every detail of arrangement in placing ‘*Dyapepticure, the specific for dys- pepsia,” properly before the public. It can now be obtained by druggists and general dealers from the wholesale drug houses of St. John, Halifax and Montreal. The thorough manner in which it is being edvertised has already (in three weeks time) resulted in a large demand from all sections of the Mari- time Provinces The pamphlet on Dyspepti- cure contains in its 12 pages the results in the fewest possible words of many years carefal investigation and the chronic dyspeptic can- not do better than send for one of these little Looks, which explains this positively new rational and welcome treatment of the most miserable of modern diseases. Druggists and general dealers in P. E. Is- land can now obtain Dyspepticure from T. 3B. Barker & Sons and 8. McDiermid, St. Joha, and Brown & Webb and Simson Broa. & Co., Halifax. crear A Bie Fuscaia.—Says the Chatham World: Rev. R. 8. Crisp has the champion fuschi:. Its drooping branches have aspread of five feet, and would resch much further if they were pulled out straight, Jt is rich in bloom now. It has adorned three paraonages, and will be taken to St. John on Mi. Crisp’s re- moval there. Dennis, of the Halifax Herald, is to be congratulated upon his re election as alder- man. The editor of the Herald is a candidate for election to the legislature in Halifax, and the editor of the Mail, the Herala’s evening edition, is a candidate in Shelburne. A bottle containing a card on which was written: “Steamer Erie, Capt. McGinty, at the bottom of the sea,” was picked up the other day off the English coast, and several London papers sapiently concluded it was a ,message from the ill-fated steamer Erie Eng'ish editors evidently do not read their American exchanges very closely, or they might have seeu some passing reference to McGinty ere this. His name has been in one. or two papers, and possibly three. $V if the Suffere rs from Consumption, Scrofula and General Dabitity will try Scott's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil, with Hy pophos- phites, they will find immediate reliei and a permament benetit.
