' ss-A ' i U Charlottetown Ropreslntatlvq ~‘ _ Ernest Rice _ 185 Grafton Street _ outlined the insuperabie financial difficulties facing further operation of the Grand Trunk Pacific Line and requested that it be transferred to the Government of Canada. The let- ter, which graphically sets forth the hopeless position in which the Laur- ier legacy finds itself failing further Government assistance is one of a series of documents bearing on the sumosed loans to the Grand Trunk Pacific and Canadian Northern Rail- way Companies which were tabled in the Commons today by the Minister of Finance. According to Mr. Smithers letter the Grand Trunk Company is anxious to wash its hands of the G T P. alto- gether. He refers therein to a sugges- tion by the Prime Minister that the Government loan the Grand Trunk Pacific a sum sufficient to enable the road to meet its fixed charges for five years and states that under pres- ent circumstances he did not think the Grand Qrunk Company would be justified "in entering into any arrange ment which would involve the accu- mulation of further liabilities against that Company in revenue." He pro- poses instead that the Government take the G T P line over, the Grand Trunk Company to surrender to the Government all the common stock it holds in the western line (amounting to 25,000,000) on condition that the Government relieve the Grand Trunk Company of all its liabilities respect- ring the Grand Trunk Pacific subsid~ iaries and branch, lines etc., and re- paying tothe Grand Trunk Company i all advances made to the western road These advances according to a foot- note total $26,179,728.
