E. | Hughes’ letter is well worthy the earvest consideration of citizeos, in several letters ito the press | have myself protested ' against this injastice to Charlottetown. To }ask the city taxpayers to and inetitution; and then to be taxed to roaiotain public works in the country, is nothing short of piracy. The B. N, A. Act authorizes direct taxation for pro- vincial purposes. The city, as a part of the province, is presumably equally liable with the country to taxation. This taxa-~ tion being for provincial purposes the city hasthe same claim for public works as the country. In handing over to the corx ‘ poration the charge and maintenance of | city works, the revenue from city sources was aleo placed with the City Council Now that the government have taken the revenue, and a larger one, to themselves, it would become the cityto band them back the remainder and let the Govern- ment undertake the expense of our streets and other public works. This is only rea~ If a proposition were made to tax the country for moneys to repair the streets of Charlotietown we would be promp'ly told that we were a set of pirates. Why then tax the city for funds to repair Very few of ou citizens have been care» ful to estimate the extent to which Provins cial revenue properly belonging to the city WORKS. | | Successful Island Students of First Second and Third Years. has been spent in the country, The Gor~! ernment expenditure of 1898 amounted to) $277,462.98. Sir,--The Guardian today re City Sewerage has been misinformed or is certainly astray when it savs “that delay in construction is caused by the contractors vot having the neces- sary appliances for tsking care ofthe water. I learn from some ofthe contractors that they are not going to take care of water until they strike it, and others of them — will not take care of it for fun until they are in a position 10 clove up the ditches. The statement of the Guardian that “the work is being delayed for want of pipe” is perfectly correct and for no other reason. Ove Wm Kxows, Riots in Incia.
