June '7—(CP) — The warmest debate in four days of deliberations broke out late today in the General Assembly pf the Presbyterian Church in Canada as commissioners heard the overhead expenses of the Board of Missions spiritedly attacked and defended. Speaking on the proposal that two secretaries be appointed for missions work, one for foreign and one for the home field, Dr. J. S. Shortt, Barrie, Ont., declared this would bring the administrative costs of mission ivork along to about $30,000. He believed this to be high and thought the spending might induce uneasiness among congregations and place a curb on individual giv- ings. Dr. A. M. Hill. convener of the Board of Missions, leaped to the defence of the overhead. He claim- ed that without direction and sup ervision ihe widespread work of the ‘Missions Board, both at home and abroad could not be carried on. Dr. Shortts attitude spelled pes- . simism, he said. adding that“whis- pering, campaigns’ about what of- ficials of the church were getting paid was one of the most serious obstacles the church had in over- come. The United Church spent much more on similar work, he argued. and the expenditure ivas a "sound business expense" to be borne if the church was to go ahead with I its work of spreading the Gospel. Without a. voice of dissent. the Grncrnl Assembly authorized a $500,000 budget for next year, an increase oi’ $80000 as the commis- sioners responded in the plea of the Board of Administration that "the time has come to go ahead." A proposal to set 70 as the rc- tiring use for church ofiicials and synodlcal missionaries WflS referred to a committee. Scouts Receive Heroism Awards OTTAWA.
