HISOELLANEUS. Fnowsas sun Faun-rs or Aus1-tui.ti.—- Many fruits grow and flourish in these colo- nies which can be reared in England only when they are housed, when means are talten to temper the lteenness of the winter’: blast, and when the tetn erature of tlieiiir is increased b artificia contrivances. It is ‘a inpttcr of oubt, however, whether any, thitig is gained by the inhabitants of New Holland in this particular ; for many fruits which are admirably adapted to the tem- perature and moist climate of Great Britain, either do not come to perfection, or will not grow at all, in the dry bot atmosphere of New Holland. A decision on the relative ridvauitages and disadvantages will depend in this instance on the tastes of the indivi- dual; and in arriving at a conclusion on this point, the natives of Great Britain must itot forget to bear in mind, that every one is apt to attach somewhat more thatt its intrinsic value to that which is beyond his reach. For Pxilmpltt. the Eiiglishinan will be in danger offorming tl highly favourable opiiii- on of the capabilities of that country for the growth of fruit, where the orange and the grape flourish and yield abundantly in the open air; but it will do him no harm to remember, that if the Australian colonist- gain the orange and the grape, they loin- the apple, the current, the gooseberry, an ‘ that most delicious of all fruits, the straw berry. As it is with fruits, so it is tri .. flowers. The native flowers are many of tht-in exceedingly beautiful, and the gera- nimn is almost a wood; but still very many oftlie sweetestgand most beautiful English flowers will not grow in the climate of New Holland. The native flo.vers are, with verv few exceptions, perfectly inodorous, and they gladden the eye with their grateful pretence httt for a short period. The di-etii-y wastes of New Holland are relieved by the varied tints of the native flowers in the spring time only. But few persons, I apprehend, would estimate the hcaiitiful, but sccntlcss, native flowers of New Hol- land beyond the more quiet tinted, but sweet-smelling, flowers of Great Britain. Eveiilwere they on a par in point of beauty and fragrance, the English flowers continue bloomingagreat part of the year, whilst the dull monotony of the arid shrubs of Australia is relieved for only a short time by beautifully formed and exquisitely tinted, but inodorous Bowers. ‘With all the charm of firm, the Australian flowers must yield to the delicious fragrance and aim le col- ouring ofthe flowers ofthc charming hedge- rows of " merry Engliin .”—Bortl¢tt’s New Holland. - l)icnans’s Soccnss as AN Airi-non.- 'I‘hiis_ far, no writer has succeeded in tlrnwltlg so large pecuniary profits from the exercise of his talents. as Charles lluzkeiis. His last rotnance, “ Bleak lluuae,” which appeared in monthly nlI:ltl)cI'S, had so‘ wide a circulation in that form, that it become a valuable me- tIttt'Il of advertising, so that before its close the few pages of the tale were com- pletely lost in sheets or advertisements which were stitched to them. The low- est price for such an advertisement was $5, and tnniiy were paid for at the rate at all 15 and $30. From this there is nothing improbable in '. the supposition that, in addition to the large sum receiv- ed for tales, its author gained $73,000 by his advertising sheets. The Household Words produces an income of 820,000. though Dickens, having put it entirely into the hands ofan assistant editor, has nothing to do with it bcy ontl furnishing a weekly article.
