, 2005 Is the NHL Season Done; Who’s Going to the Superbowl? Sportsjuice by Justin Richard Contributor We are now in the final hours before the 2004/2005 NHL season is officially cancelled. Last week, in a last minute attempt to try to save the season, Trevor Linden, the president of the NHLPA, organized a private meeting for representatives of the NHL and NEBL? A. Despite Linden ’s passion for commencing the season as soon as possible, there was nothing gained from the meeting and it seems that neither side has any intention to give in even the slightest. For some reason there were no invites sent out to Gary Bettman and Bob Goodenow. Perhaps these two have become too stubborn to get invited anymore. ‘This meeting was to be held in an undisclosed location so the media wouldn’t disturb the talks and blow the whole thing way out of proportion. Somehow, though, the media managed to find the undisclosed location-at the O’Hare Airport in Chicago. Linden walked out of the meeting very frustrated that he couldn’t either side to compromise at all. There are now players, presidents and owners all over the league that say that the season is, unfortunately, all but lost. Elsewhere is sports, the NFL playoffs are nearing the end. The Conference Championships are due to take place on Sunday the 23". In the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers are at home to the New England Patriots. Despite the Steelers beating New England in the regular season and having home-field advantage, The Pats are still the favourite by 3 points. [know I should never underestimate the skills of Cory Dillon, talent of Tom Brady, and intelligence of Coach Bill Belichick, but I love the Steelers and I am a sucker for the underdog. Steelers are going to the Superbowl with a 27-24 win. In the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons are visiting Philadelphia Eagles in what should also be a great game. The Falcons have been looking promising as of late but it will be a tough win to pull off the Conference Championship game that will also be held in Pennsylvania. With the Eagle’s Terrell Owens still sidelined, Philadelphia will certainly be weaker but nevertheless they are still a very strong team. The Eagles are the favourite by 4.5 points and with the weather due to be cold and snowy, the Falcons are really going to have to bring their “A+” game. With Atlanta’s QB, Michael Vick, having his hot and cold performances this season and the inexperience of the Falcon’s coaches, look for Philadelphia to survive another week with a 31-10 victory. The 39" Superbowl is to take place February 6" in Jacksonville, Florida and with what my guess would be a very conservative Halftime Show.
