Last week saw first team hockey players take to the ice for the first game of the season. The game was played in the college Hnk against the B.Y.C. team from torsn. In the first period the Saints seemed off guard and the opposing team took the lead. The second period rallied the saints as they seemed to catch fire and come from behind easily to win in the end by the score. 6-5. Previous to this game the team had only a few practices since coming back from the hell- days. This game, however, leads supporters to believe that when the time comes around for inler-colleg- late play and the boys have had more practice sessions, St, Dun- stan's will have it well-balanced Appointment Announced entry in the Intercollegiate League. Intramural hockey got under way last week also, Exhibition games. were held to give the classes a chance to view their talent in ac-l' tion and organize playing linesw Sophomores took the measure of. the Freshmen 'to the tune of 3-0 in the opening game of the season, The brand of hockey exhibited in, this game. even considering that it, was the first game. did not measurci up with the calibre of intramurall hockey known in former years. To make the league more competitive. it may be necessary for some classes to combine with one another and ice only one team. A better brand of hockey was evidenced in the scc-1 and game in which the Seniors dc-i rented the Juniors 3-0. Because the Weather Man hasl been much more co-operative latc- ly. the students have been able to enjoy a skate now in the evenings. The first of these enjoyable pas- times was held last Sunday even- ing and followed throughout the week whenever it was not feared that the ice would break up due to the unseasonably mild weather. 8 O C To leave hockey and skating for this week and turn now to the act- ivities in basketball. Last Saturday night first team journeyed to Sum- merside to take on the l't.C.A.F. at the port and in this encounter emerged the winners by a 56-34 count. In keeping with the heavy schedule which is laid down for them for the season, the first learn boys trotted the floor of P.W. C. against the Abbies on Wednesday favor. This was the highest score they attained in the league games so far and is an indication 'ihat the boys are beginning to get their form. As the boys admit them- selves. they are not yet in condi- tion, but. this is not to be expected this early in the season. The game which is slated for here tniigrh'. against Dalhousie University of Hal- ifax will give the boys It taste of what they may expect in intercol- legiate competition this year. In addition. this game should provide the fans with some classy basket- ball. Second team, under the direction of coach Bob Mooney, first team guard, defeated the Arabs 63-21 in II regular game in the Abegweit House League. Slowey was high man for the Saints, To conclude the basketball activities for this week here is an observation illus- trating the improvement which has been made in the type of basket- ball around here in the past few years. Many correctly attribute this improvement to the better facil- lties provided for in the new Kym. This makes everyone realize more and more the gratitude owed the alumni for "this up-to-date build- ing. The observation: Two years ago the first team entered the Is- land senior playoffs against P.W.C. and lost out. This year the second team have command of the lead of a. league in which P.W.C. and other teams of comparable strength are included. Admittedly P.W.C. did have a good team the year they won the championship, better than they have had since. but yet this interesting observation indicates that basketball has come it long way at St. Dunstan's in the short span of two years. . . . Two trial debates of the M. I. D. I. were held last week. Pat Mcxenna and Jerome Quinn, speaking at- firmatively on the resolution, '"I'hat social security measures are det- rimental to the best interests of the Canadian people" in opposition to Gerald Steele and Art Pendergast. so convinced the audience of their stand as to gain its decision in their favor. The resolution, "That Canadn should have R distinctive enough of school, so went in work and got. a good job. Now I am 0 O O 0 etc 0 I 0 I 0 o o n 0 o o o o o 0 0 0 0 0 u I 0 '0 0 O 0 0 0 a Canadian mm" was uphgjd at gm. eiigitgcil In .1 boy who has two more years of college.
