Stiil, not- withanding all this, Mrs. Cleveland marri was supremely happy, looked happy and dignified, besides, She had ina measure become used to public gaze, for during the few fief months of her engagement to President Cleveland her beauty and talent and lovable disposition were talked about the spect Miss Frances Folsom, “She had known Mr. Cleveland for years, but few knew that she had chosen for his wife; indeed, his visits to the Folsom home in Buffalo were thought by many to be intended as a tribute to rs. Folsom. The day after President and Mrs, Cleveland were married they went to Deer Park, Md., where they were the uests of Mr. Robert Garrett. Their oneymoon of three weeks was spent in this romantic spot, and then Mr, Cleve- land purchased a house in the outskirts of Washington‘ which afterward famous as “Red Top.” Mr. Cleveland also bought a cottage at Marion, Mass., and subsequentiy ‘‘Giray Gables,” at Buzzard’s' Bay, where he and his wife have since passed their ¢ummers. After Mr. Cleveland's first term of of- fice expired he and Mrs. Cleveland came to New York, where they took up their residence at No, 816 M.dison avenue. There Baby Ruth, the nation’s pet, was born, six minutes after midnight on the morning of October 3, 1891. Miss Ruth, although it was some time after that be- fore she was dignified with this name, weighed eight pounds when she arrived, and was as fines baby as any- body could wish to see. She soon began to laugh and crow, and was not very slow about showing her pretty blue eyes and acquainting those around her with the fact that she had a delightfully sunny disposition for one so young. Baby Ruth did not creep into every- body’s heart. She got there at one bound, and was from the inni deluged with all sorts and kinds o rattles and toys, tooth-cutters and jewelry, carriages with canopies gor- geousenough to satisfy an Indian prince, and everything a baby’s heart could de- sire. Her new sister will have to under- go a like experience, but it is a foregone conclusion that she will observe the err set by Miss Ruth and bear her 1onors with child-like dignity and becoming fortitude. —New York Journal. A Cat With False Teoth. The cat that owned the false teeth had lost his own, and had his jaw broken be- sides by a drunken wretch who beat him with a cobble-stone. With great care, the poor animal finally recovered; but | he had to be fed with a little milk in a spoon fora long time. When able to pursue his ordinary business of catching rats and mice, he could not eat them, because he had no teeth to chew with. Something must be done for him, for life supported on “spoon vittles” was a burden; and a young dentist in the neighborhood, who had become greatly interested in the unfortunate cat, re- solved to try the experiment of making him a set of false teeth. Taking the cast for the plate was a terrible piece of work, as Captain object ed to it with all his might; but it was nothing to what followed when the teeth were fairly in. If the animal had plung- ed and scratched while the plate was being titted, he acted like a mad thing when it was firmly attached to his jaw— although it was well made, and fitted perfectly. He could not understand that it would enable him to continue the luxurious feasts to which he had been accustomed ; and for several days he was furious over it. Every possible and impossible scheme was tried to get the uncomfortable thing out of his mouth; he tore at it with his claws, he shook his head violentir to make it drop out, he butted aguinst heavy pieces of furniture, and if any one came near him, he growled and scratched at them. There seemed to be danger of his going mad, and his friends were sorely puzzled toknow what to do with him, whon, greatly to their relief, he calmed down, and appeared to have come to the conclusion that his new possession was, after all, a blessing in disguise. He was once more gentle and affectionate, as he had been previous to his misfortune; and the plate was now often taken out te- tween meals and put back ae Ip this way it was worn comfortably for over ycar.—Harper’s Young People, “} Don't Want Any Dinner,” Well, if you should miss a meal, all the better.
