Blood is not a simple fluid like water. It is made up of minute bodies and when these are deficient, the blood lacks the life-giving principle. Scott’s Emulsion is not a mere blood purifier. It actually increases the number of the red corpuscles in the blood and changes unhealthy action into health. If you want to learn more of it we have a book, which tells the story in simple words. { SCOTT & BOWNE, Belleville, Ont. Jobason & Co., Boston, Mase Doete —- FRUIT TREE CULTURE. Excessive Pruning is Injuriouf and Leads to Premature Decay. The American Cultivator says that intelligent tree treatment is just as ea Sential for our orchard trees as for the magnificent shade trees around our houses or in the streets. The popular ity of arboriculture during the last few years has had the effect of calling publie attention to the needs of trees, and there have sprung up in various parts of the country practical tree growers who are doing wonders in showing the pegple what can be ac complished through the application of intelligent methods of cultivation. We are at last getting symmetrically-shap- ed shade and street fine forest and timber trees end even good fruit One of the essentials of good tree culture is to understand the trees, trees first general shape of trees under culture A pear tree does not tike the shape of an apple, peach of forest tree any reere than a maple assumes the style of growth of a horse chestnut, hick ory or beech Consequently, we can not prune all trees alike. The growt! of a Greening tree is very differen from that of a Northern Spy. and the Seckel pear trees are entirely different in shape from the Shejdons or Anjous We want well-shaped fruit trees, but we do not want to reform them by truning after some preconceived n» tion of our ow: Given the natura shape of the tre« it is weil then te stick as close to the genera! type a: messible. That is the shoots an¢ trenches that are abnormal should bs clipped off while very young 1: stould never be necessary to cut © large limbs, for the young twigs shou!: 1B i ° d be pruned before they have assum taveh size The rule is that lars limbs should be cut off, or need to b cut off, only when they have ber: broken accidentally or twisted by the wind There is a school of tree culturist who oppose pruning. They are right = far az excessive pruning is concerned Disbudding should largely take th place of prunine« on small shrubs anc saplings, end clipping of twigs with « sharp knife should be about all tha: the latter ought to require. Suckers of course, must be cut away, and some times the inside of the head of the tre will need cleaning out The orar growers of Florida clean out the insir of the heads of the trees if they e pect a good crop of fruit, and in th: way the sun gets to all parts of th tree. The same plan would work quit- successfully with many of our close headed Northern fruit trees. Many © cur apple, pear and other fruit tree are apt to form a hollow at the june tion of two largs limbs, and very fr juently water eclects there and cause ret One of the limbs in time give way and ruins the tree. The same ! true where large limbs have been cu eff. In an old orchard every tree wil h«ve large hollows like this wher ewls and ither birds build their nests Whole limbs are eaten out, and fre qi ently the very heart of the tree This is one of the results ef the evi of pruning off largs limbs. If the: have to be cut off after being broke’ accidentally, it is well to saw ther trunk, so as to give th water no chance to collect. Where : h« How is inclined to start in the crote? of a tree, an ingeniously-graftec Franch can be started there, so as t fill up the space. In this way minty fine, old trees will be saved from pre mature decay. neato Green Ford for Fowls close to the Farm News saya tn a late issue tha: most people think that it is impossible to furnish an adequate supply of gree: feod for their fowis during the winter, and do not think that the substitut: they furnish their horses or cakg$e right be used in feeding their fowl just as well.
