Runcimnti to Washington, a,‘ visit which ended recently, and the Dutch ministers of commerce and agriculture to Norway and Sweden. Behind both mission is a realization of what ls wrong with the world to- day. The economic crisis of 1931, with its collapse tn world prices, was met in almost every country, Brit- ain included, by a resort to econ- omic nationalism Each erected tariff wa ls, in which the only breaches to be made have been bl- latcral trade agreements, and these, since they frequently cilrtail the trade of a third country, have of- fered little stimulus to world trade in general. Where economic tiat- lonallsm has not actually caused bad relations between countries it has often accentuated those which have their origin ‘in political causes. —Glasgow Herald. “It $05! at film Dyi/anu W. THE FARM AND THE SCHOOL Sin-The subject of education in its relation to agriculture is one that from time to time comes up for discussion at our annual fann- er's meetings. In this respect, ll; has earned for itself the right to be classed as one of our hardy perennials. At "the farmers’ meetings re- cently held in the cfty, after much discussion on this subject the views of those present were embodied in two sets of resolutions, calling for immediate action. We think that much contained ln the resolutions arises from a misconception of the whole question. What may we askfls the object and purpose of’ our public school system? Is it not, first of all, to provide, all far as our means will permit, the training and instruction that will enable our youth to take their places as worthy and enlightened citizens. and furnish them with a foundation on which to bulld the structure of their life's work? As a preparation to discharge his du- ties to the society in which h lives, the farmer requires this broad and generous education no less than others. and the school age term ls all too short for this purpose, without attempting to graft on it a course of vocational training. It ls no more the func- tion of the public school to teach practical agriculture, than it is to give instruction fn motor me- chanics or dentistry. The re- commendation was also made, that instruction in agriculture be made a part a. teacher training, and passed on through this medium to the pupils in our schools. Now a great many of our teachers are young girls in their teens, who, even if farm bred have no prac- ttcal knowledge of the subject. THE COLLAR. As to educating boys and glrls away from the farm, everyone knows that the shifting of pup- ulatton from rural to urban cen- tres has been going on for hundred years, m..- to the me- uhanlmtlon of industry. But the people remaining on the fanns have not only maintained but tn- creased the production of food- stuffs, by the use of improved methods a-nd machines, chiefly the latter. Population, in its move- ments, has simply adjusted itself to the requirements of the times. and will continue to do so. I am ln full sympathy with prac~ tlcal training in agriculture, when imparted in the right place. But the public school la not the place. Leave the school to its proper function of providing for its pupils, whatever calling ln life they may afterwards pursue. the ground work on which they may bulld for the coming years. H: says I am knocking the proposed new canning industry by saying that I and my klnd would refuse to sell foul to the cannery for 12c a lb. This ts l. false sta‘ ‘ because every farmer has a certain amount of culls which he must -“ of every year and which are no good for anything but camera; there- fore he must sell to the canning factory at. whatever price they wlsh t0 pay hlm. What I have said ls that it would not pay anyone to raise chickens to sell at 12 cents a pound. He also asks the manager of a large hatchery to tell hlm ff he uses three eggs m hatch one chick. How could he tell hlm that when the hatchery sells these chicks at one to three days old? My stato- ment ls that it tattoo three eggs to raise one chick to maturity or un- tlll it to flt for the table, and any poultry man can give hlm this tn- fv. atton but not a hatchery. Hegoeson totollusofomrnan he knows that keeps between I00 and 300 hens and rays he feeds about a gallon and a half each meal to all these honl. But I have known this man to pay as much l5 $125 for three hens and a. rooster and I have paid this man $25.00 i for one rooster. These people arel not. raising chickens to sell at 12 cents a pound. l There ls money in hens, but I am afraid not on Prince Edward ts- land where feed is so high. I know men ln the poultry business who buy their corn at 75 cents per hundred and the best mixed grain at $1.10 per bag. Here we pay $1.75 for corn and $3.00 for other feed per bag. Observer has told us that. the canning factory here would loose money tf it. paid more for its raw material. and we are alsotold that Mr. Jenkins ls compelled to ship tn here tons of fowl from other pro- vinces in order to keep his factory going. But We don't hear anything about the tons of chickens he ships out of the Island to other markets; and much of what he buys from our farmers as canners at 12c lb. If Mr. Jenkins would try to keep these birds that he buys as cann- ers for his factory he might 88$ enough raw material to keep ft running. Now that the Government intends to lnvestlg ‘ the prospefl? 5°!‘ 5 canning industry here on a large scale. I would advise them to M80 look into the profit end of this tn- dust/ry and see ff there is no way 0f giving the farmer a break who would be willing to go in for rais- ing more raw material for this factory; alto tf feed could not be brought here more cheaply. I don't intend to follow this up any further regardless of what Observer has to say, for it serves no good purpose. I am Sir, etc. J. W. MITCHELL New Dominion r. r. 1-.
