That the one church in the beginning was sufficient to save all-that this was the' intention and p urpese of the great God in' the establishment of the church is seen in Prcachcd by Rev. R. W. Stevenson, Formerly Located in Montague “ON THE CHURCH OE THE 'IWENTIETH CENTURY” His Effort Praised. lu the Third Avenue Church of Christ-A Synopsis as Taken from the Troy, N. Y. Daily Press of a Recent Date- Sunday evening the pastor, Rev. R. W. Stevenson, preached an interesting ser- mon on “The Church for the Twentieth_ Century.” Taking for his text Is. 63. 19. “I willrejoicc in Jerusalem and joy in my_ people, and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her nor the voice of crying," he said: This evening Iam to speak of the church for the twentieth century. This topic may nothing in the past sutllcieiit for the present. This is the furthest from my mind. To advance such a position would be a reflection on my intelligence and would be misleading to others. However, it must be admitted that a good deal ofthe religion of the past has ~ been a failurein meeting the expectation _l,of those who have been its most faithful and enthusiastic propagandists. I do not now refer to the religion of the heathen, for that has been an admitted failure, but I do refer to that which has come to us under the garb of Christianity. Many of the religious bodies which have been l called into existence because of some peculiarity of doctrine have served their purpose, if they everhad any, and have become extinct. To recite the names of any of them would consume much of myj time and beof little or no profit. If you would be more fully instructed on this point, turn to your theological diction. aries and encyclopdias. Many of the religious denominations of the present day. great in number though they be,rich in the wealth of the world, enjoying large places of worship and having much social prestige, have failed to meet the needs of the past century. It has been admitted by the supporters of these de- nominations perhaps unwittingly that they cannot reach the masses; that the people are turning away from the churches. An apology is offered for de- nominationalism that these different religious societies are necessary to reach men of different cast of mind. What one cannot reach another denomination may succeed in doing. But in this denominat- ionalism has been a decided failure. The complaint still is, “The people are not attending the church services." The majority of men are outside of the, churches. It is said that the complaint is true. The reason for this is the religious God so loved the world that he sent His the parable of the great supper. An invitation was sent out to all, even to those in the highways and hedges. The feast was supplied with guests, end still there was room. There are no apartments mentioned to suit the classes, but all were together in the presence of the King. In whatever respect religious people fail, in being thus complete, they are to that extent short of being what the church of Christ was. In the multiplied divisions, Christianity s made to cater to the whims, peeuliarities and prevailing social conditions of the day, she has little or no strength in many places to dictate in moral and spiritual aifairs. _ _ Did Jesus Chris? organize or authorize ‘ tuted and sundered as we tlnd the aggipns wdfrld to-day? _ tl~He not rather build a church of such strength, beauty of perfection and dignity that men must be obedient to her govern- ment? The religion of the Lord Jesus Christ must not be changed, and twisted to suit the whims and notions of this and that company of men, but He has given to the world a church, to the government of which men and women must be obedient, as He is the head of that government. He ha_s done the legislating ‘for His church. .The ch angie must be seen in the moral and _spiritual complexion of men rather than in the integrity of theclmrch of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a mould into which our lives must be poured and made like unto His own glorious life. If this is not the case, what shall _we have but a great ugly, hideous, distorted monstrosity, a.
