PILC. 7 THE WEEK AT S. D. II? Here at Saint Dunstan's. the topic currently in the air seems to be the forthcoming annual Stud- ents' Union elections. and slowly but with the proverbial sureness. the political wheels are gathering momentum. Here and there around the campus, the usual small cliq- ues are gathering around their mythical cracker barrels and striv- ing with all their might to outwit and unwind one another as they expound with all the rhetorical cleverness that they have gleaned from the year's speech classes on so-and-so's capabilities for such- and-such an office. The funny thins is that with a set of exams Just over, you wouldn't think there would be so much hot air around the place. Since the election date has been set for this coming Monday, April 16. and since on that day the stud- ents will have to make known their choice for the positions of presid- ent, vice-president. and secretary- treasurer on the Students' Union Executive; we feel that we can expect an intensive program of speechifying between now and then. It would seem that some of the fellows are going to have to haul the lights of their qualificat- ions out from beneath their tacit- urn bushels, or have someone else do it, if these elections are going to be in any way successful. It would almost seem that each pro- spective candidate is afraid of winning by ' ation, and is therefore a bit timid about dipping his toe into the stream, but unless quite a few make the plunge prett quickly, it's going to be difficu for the student body to make a choice. We won't attempt to pre- dict the outcome of this political race, but just sit tight and trust in the ability of the Saints to choose what is best for themselves. A MIRACLE ' Last Wednesday. April 11, the fifth general meeting of the stud- ent body was held in the Assembly Hall and, Mirabile Dictu, there was a voting quorum present. The assembled students first heard Thomas V. Grant give a report on the regional conference of the Can- ndian Federation of Catholic Col- lege Students which he attended at Mount Saint Vincent's College In his report, Mr. Grant outlined the resolutions that were passed in this conference. and they con- in Halifax last April 7th and ilth.l are we use remrrea on me nsnonsr conference of the C.F.C.C.S. when it next convenes. Mr. Grant ment- ioned a Droposal brought forth at this conference that the Maritime 00119865 next year effect a tem- porary student exchange for a per- iod of about a week in order that the exchange students might be able to bring back to their home colleges some of the views. ideas, interests, and the like that pre- vail in the other institutions of higher learning in the Marltlmes. If this proposal is adopted, Mr. Grant stated. each of the colleges Participating in the program will be assessed an amount somewhere In the vicinity of five dollars to cover the registrational and gen- eral office expenses lnvolved. It would seem that a program of this nature would not only pro- vide excellent experience for the students chosen to take part in it. but it would also help greatly to intergrate the thinking of the var- ious institutions on major issues and common problems. We feel that the Students' Union, the stud- ent body in general, and the fac- ulty L00 would back any concrete venture along these lines that rmight be forthcoming from C.F.C.C.S. Since there was a voting quorum present at this meeting, the nec- essary legislation was passed to listed principally of items that location during the day and night. young druggists Mr. MacLellan is late Joseph MacLellan. ATHLETIC AWARDS The next item on the agenda for letters. these. it was easy to see that those ' who strolled to the front of the room to receive the official recog- nition of their athletic excellence had really earned their ,reward, and--we congratulate them. There followed a brief discourse by the president on the coming annual el- ections. rules for the elections and called upon the students to lend their sup port by submitting their nominat- ions for the various positions as Monday, April 16, 1956 The Guardian, Page 3 and on looking back at I Mr. Wedge outlined the the evening was the presentation of the athletic "D's" tn the sev- eral qualifying students by the president of the A.A.A., Russell Mclnnis. in the lineup for the heck- EY letters were: Jerry Burns, and Ray Gonet; and in basketball.
