For a good many years after that only small supplies were brought to Britain. You bought it at a chem- 1st’; shop, from u drawer which bore the imposing inscription “Caff. Arab." If you were so inquisitive so as to ask the apotliecary what this inscription meant. he would tell you that. it was an abbreviation of "Caffee Arabian." This was the first English variant; of the Arabic name "Cahve," which in due course developed into its resent forms. Infusions o! “ca fee" were pre- scribed for a score of ills ranging from drunkenness to consumption, dropsy to smallpox! People soon be- came aware that these infusions were certainly toothsome, 1f not health-restoring. Wealthy invaiids. real and imaginary. persuaded their physicians to prescribe large doses of coffee and. in time. other‘ shops entered the coffee trade, selling the beans for their taste rather than their medicinal qualities. 311'. cof- fee drinking began to baa popular pleasure only after the advent of the "coffee houses." the most char- acteristic feature of London in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They certainly, at one time, outnumbered the City's inns and taverns. England's first coffee house was opened in Oxford in 1850; London's lfrst such rendezvous was opened two years later in one the many alleyways that lead 111w Corrihill. The coffee-man, as the keepers of these houses wcze always known, was a Turkish manhunt who had probably crossed to Fing- land from one of the Continental capitals. where the coffee-house had long been a familiar sight. I-Iow this pioneer house prosper- ed we do not. know, but over ten years passed before the sccixid one was opened. This became one of the Londoner's favourites, under the name of The Rainbow. As these places became more numerous each one had its name, taker. either from a sign similar f-o those of inns or from the proprietors frame. One of the best. known was Wills, a Pet; rendezvous of the poet: Dryden. Once the coffee house caugh: on. it became more popular in England than anywhere else. Iietwecn 1680 and 1730, more coffee was consum- ed in London than any other my, and most; of it was drunk in these coffee-houses. Probably coffee has had more in- fluencc on English life than any other drink. The coffee-house was the great, social centre of its time. Most of the eighteenth-century poets and authors met their friends n these centres, gaining inspira- tion for some of the greatest books from the talk andcxchange of ideas there. City business men gathered at other houses, and two of the “Square Mike's" most famous insti- tution: developed from coffee- houscs where merchants and finan- ciers mct to do business over a "dish of coffee"-never a cup, if you please. Lloyd's coffee-house saw the birth of the world-famous insur- ance exchange. while the stock Exchange was formed as a com- mon centre for activity, which had, until then. been carr ed On in a score of coffee houses. One of these was the headquarters for brokers who dealt in Consuls, another was the home of the industrial share market, and so forth. Besides being exchanges for liter- ary and political opinions and for business dealings. the coffee-houses were among London's favorite soc- ial centres. Most of them were vir- tually clubs. You could read the newspapers on their tables. beside a roaring fire, and remain sipping coffee or Just talking or reading for as long as you pleased. Coffee was cheaper then than it is today. and the purchase of a. penny dish of the beverage entitled you to the use of the place for as lorlg as you cared to stay. How coffee was “brewed" when first, drunk in London, I do not know. The coffee-pol did not make its debut there until the beginning of the eighteenth century. There was always a good deal of political activity going on in the coffee-houses; Charles II tried to suppress them, as he had a sus- picion. probably not wholly unjusti- fied, that some of them were cen- tres for what we would 001314,)’ call "subversive activity." About the middle of the eight- teenth century. tea, which nad first been brousht over about the same time as coffee. but which nod ion; remained ridiculously costly. drop- ped in rice to a level at which all could u ford it.
