It is significant that the London Times. since the advent of the McDonald administrati has become a warm friend of Canada. In a recent article Tunes descri law-abiding, } bic | VCS as | } the this country loval and the least costly and least troublesome and yet the great- est of British colonial possessions.’ —As an answer to some statements of | Tae EXAmIner, which it caunot rebut, | the Patriot says Tue ExaMINER is draw- | ing $10,000 a vear from the Dominion | Government. We take this, with thanks, | as the Patriot's estimate of the amount of | Governmental patronage Tue Ex-| AMINER is entitled to; aud only regret that the estimate is lacking “the essential | element.” | --Irish-Americans who have visited | the old country during the summer.report that the farming class has not been for | years in so prosperous a condition. The | report of Sir Rivers W ilson, Comptroller Geveral of Savings Banks, just issued, confirms this. Last year the average of deposits in Irelaud was larger thaa is England or Scotland, reaching £6 1s 1d, while in England and Wales it was £4 8s, and in Scotland £3 4s 10d. —In his remarks before the Yale stu- dents, Lord Coleridge said:—‘‘l must publicly argue here, that asa lawyer aud a judge I most heartly am in favor of the classics. I have done many foolish things io my past life, but I do owe to the hours spent most wisely among the classics the position I now occupy. I} have made it 4 religion, so far as I could, | uever to let a day pass without spending some time of it upon my Latin and Greek, and | hecrtly believe that my success was materially aided by those classics which have been the study ot my life.” —On the 30th of October the Patriot stated that— **The recent losses sustained by the bank. ing institutions of the country have alarmed capitalists who have deposits in the banks, and on Sir Leonard's advertisement ap- pearing, they hastened to seck investment in Government bonds at alow rate of inter- est. This shows luck of confidence in the business of the country, because no capital- ist who saw an opening for protitable invest- ment in manufactures, or any other home industry, would take up Government 4 per cent bonds.” On the 1st of November the Patrict quotes the statement of the Mail’s Ottawa correspondent, that the result of Sir Leonard's advertisement is that,— ‘The total amount tendered for was of Tae, of which $977,000 was accepted, ing ator above par, and the balance of $200,000 offered was unacce ted.” And fails to see in the latter fact, a com- plete reputation of its former slander about “the lack of confidence in the busi- ness of the country !” —Some of the papers say that Lord Lansdowne is cordially disliked by the people of Ireland. On the other hand, it is said that the statement is wholiy untrue. But whether true or false, it is certain that the good qualities of the people of Ireland ‘are heartily admired by Lord Lansdowne. In reply to an address presented to him in Ottawa, ‘Let methank you, sir, for your refer- ence to myself and my connection with Ireland. I have spent a considerable por- tion of my life among Inshmen, and that portion has not been the least pleasant. It has enabled me to appreciate the many admirable qualities which members of the Irish race have brought to this country; opportunities offered to them on this side of the Atlantic have enabled them to turn to excellent account. I am glad to know that Lady Lansdowne is standing by me to receive her share of the congratulations which you are here to offer. She, like myself, is bound to Ireland by many pleas- ant associations. We have, both of us, lately experienced at the handa of our Irish friends much of that warm heartedness for which the Irish race is proverbial.” Our Advertisers. D. He approach- edthe shunting engine and drawing the attention of the driver, said, ‘*If you move that locomotive it is at fw PERIL OF YOUR LIFE.” ‘Lhe driverjdid not move. He noticed that the individual who so summarily command- 'ed him to be at ease, was an extraordinary character, and might have some authority. giving this command, Mr. Brown took from his pocket a piece of white chalk and placed a ‘Broad R.” on_ the side of the engine. He then proceeded to the, Freight House. On his departure the driver of the shunting engine preceived that a ‘*Broad R” had been placed—no doubt by Mr, Brewn—on the Station, Freight House, and all empty cars in the yard. Entering the Freight House he bade the clerk lock the doors, and allow nothing to be removed without his permission. He then proceeded to put the ** BROAD R.’ on all freight in the shed, including empty egg cases. The station master made a vigorous protest against Mr. Brown’s high handed proceedings, but he was treated as the idle wind which the broad R gentleman respected not. The Station master then telephoned for the police. The officer arrived with that alacrity for which Sum- merside policemen arenoted. The Station master, on his arrival, ordered Mr. Brown's arrest. Mr. Brown protested and questions of authority arose on all sides. The officer demanded Mr. Brown’s authority for seiz- ing Government property, Mr. Brown’s hand descended into « remote corner of his pants pocket and drew therefrom A COLT’S REVOLVER. at the policeman he said: ”’ The yard master in the freight house became excited at the sudden pro- duction of firearms, the freight clerk be came nervous, and the policeman trembled before it, while the Station master stood by ready for any emergency. It was a time when life was in danger. The policeman was under cover of the revolver, and a movement of Brown’s forefinger would cost his life. The yard master saw this, and bounding forward threw Brown upon the floor. The station master was op him in a moment, and with one hand on his throat and the other grasping the revolver, ‘he deprived the would-be assassin of his weapon. The villain was then fettered and CAST INTO JAIL. Subsequently he was arraigned for ex- amination before His Honor Stipendiary Magistrate Howe. The revolver was ex- amined and every chamber was found to be loaded. Dr. Jarvis gave evidence, and pronouiced Brown te be a crank. The prisoner was then remanded for further examination. It is whispered if Summerside that Brown is one of those grits who believe that the N. P. has ruined Canada, and that it is now time to seize Government property for the benetit of all concerned. ~-- ane or Current Clippings.
