Weits & Ricnarspon Co., Gexriemey,—l think it my duty, with- out eolicitation from anyoae, to write in the interests of other sufferers, and give yous testimonial in favor of your {to me) almost miraculous remedy, Paine’s Celery Compound For more than a year I wase uffering from the agonizing pains of sciatica, and after try- ing all that medica) skill could devise, and } THE SPLIT INFINITIVE. G. Bernard Shaw Says the Clamor About It Is All Nonsense, In a letter to the editor of the London Chronicle G. Bernard Shaw writes: I should have thought, now that we have an academy of letters, that it might rescue us from the gentlemen who occa- | sionally write to you to explain how English should be written. Some time | ago you les loose an unhappy creature | to whom some competent person had incautiously pointed out a common blunder in the use of ‘‘and which.’’ Not understanding the matter, he began accusing every writer in whose works be could discover ‘‘and which’ of writing bad English. With your per- mission, I have extinguished bim, and he has not since been heard of. There was some excuse for that poor wretch, because there unquestionable is a wrong way of using ‘‘and which,’’ but for the ‘‘split infinitive’’ pest there is no excusy at all. There is nothing whatever to mislead him except his own nature. If any man were to object to a split indic- ative such as ‘‘I greatly regret,’’ or a split subjunctive such as ‘‘I should greatly prefer,’’ or a split imperative such as ‘‘come slowly ap,’’ what news- paper would waste an inch of space on bis foolish ignorance? And yet this split infinitive nousense is taken quite seri- usly by editors who are sufficiently vood writers to repeatedly use it them- selves. The infinitive is a mood in which the sition of the adverb cannot possibly produ ambiguity; consequently the order of the words is not a matter of ” ‘THE = KlsD YOU NEED. Did Adam Suffer from Indigestion ?— His Descendants do—But They Have Dodd’s Dyspepsia Tablets, With Which to Cure Themselves. Did Adam suffer from Indigestion ? He did not—unless it was after he had eaten the forbidden fruit. All suffering, all pain, is contrary to the Creator’s intentions. Man was not in- tended to suffer, or every baby would be born with a special disease. But, since men and women, by treaking the laws of Nature, have brought pain and suffericg on themselves the all- wise Crea- tor has put within their reach the means whereby they can escape from the penalty of breaking Nature’s laws, just as He gives them the chance to escape the con- sequence of spiritual sin, Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Billiousness, Sour S omacn, Flatulence, and the other diseases arising from defective digestisn are the most common ailmentsin America, ihe means wh-reby they are cured are Dodu’s Dyspepsia Tablets.
