Walter R, Show, Secretary, In l ‘Maritime Fur Breeder 1 Through the enthusiasm and en- ergy o: a small group oi hit/crest- ed fox breeders headed chiefly oy MBIor A. S. Robertson, the first Prince Edward Island Fox Show was held In the main building of the Exhibition grounds, Charlotte- town, from October 29th to No- lvember 1st, i920. ‘This venture ‘which was viewed with consider- able skepticism at the time was ‘a tremendous success and soon every breeder and citizen was anxious for a place on the Show Band-wagon. The Show was very largely attended by citizens from all over the province and was handsomely supported by 30v. ernments, iox breeders and busi- ness houses generally. A grant o! 81,500.00 we; secured from the purchase o! crates, and this along with other contributions placed the exhibit/Iii‘! in a splendid position to _csrry on. The reason given ior this was that owing in the extension oi the war to the east, the supply oi furs from Japan, Chino. and ttussia had been completely cut oii as l were also the supply from Denmark and Norway. This left little but the domestic supply from the Unibgq states and Canada and the pelts which could be brought from the interior by trapper-s. The latter, however, had been showing steadily a very considerable drop in num- bers, due, it was said, to the Indians and trappers finding profitable em- ployment in connection with war industries. The market to be supp- lied is practically as great as it was previous to the war. Although, to a very large extent the European countries are out oi the market still there 1:, the home market and the very extensive South America terri- tory which pneviously had been sup- lplled from London, Paris and Berlin. The writer was optimistic in his ‘conviction that there was great business to be developed in the coming year provided the pelts ne- cessary could be secured, and said Show Week l I (L. W. Hancock, Prudent of the P. Ii. I. Fox Breeders’ and Erl Iilbltors‘ Association) There is one week out oi the year that every keen breeder oi fur ani- mals looks forward to from one end of the year to the other. That is Show Week. There is nothing that causes a rancher tc keep on his toes more than to know he is going to dis- play before the public eye the best oi the iruits oi his year's labor. He knows his animals will be close- ly scruthinized by the Judges and by the visiting public. He knows most oi all that his fellow breeders, or his competitors ii you please. will particularly have an eagle eye on his animals. The amount of money to be WOn or the amount of adver- tising to be had from showing are Incidental. The other points men- tioned are stingers alongside, which spurs every showman to plan and work tooth and nai‘. not a few days or a iew weeks, but the lull l2 months oi the year. Placing a gOOd show animal on the table means perhaps years oi planning: years o1 experiments in breeding and crossing various foxes in order to produce what is pleas- ing to the eye. After the animal has been carefully bred and pro- duced, tlie next step is that of pro- per feeding and care. without all, a. good show animal was never seen. ‘this means then, at least 12 months work; perhaps many years. Also. it possibly would mean a 20% ad- vance in raw pelts. 110 KENT ST. .=-= TRAPPERS 1'3 We are buying daily Muskrat, Mink, Red Fox, ;.-_ l Coon, etc., at full market prices.
