On Monday last the 50th annual meeting of the Grand Lodge, L. O. A. of British North America, was opened in the lodge room, O'Connor Street, Ottawa. A sgsuit, arrested at Brussels as an ac- complice of Van Hame, has been liberated. Another placard, threatening the Belgian King; pe been found on the walls of a theatre at eige. THE Bopy of of Owen Jones, who has been missing from St. Patrick Street, St. John, N. B, since the }7th of March, was recovered from little River on Tuesday last. A STANGE DISEASE broke out among the hogs in the slaughter yards at Winnipeg on the 2lst inst., and sixteen of the animals died. The butchers agreed not to sell any pork till the nature of the disease has been found and the remedy effected. We have very great pleasure in being able to announce that an engagement has been en- tered into with the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher to give two lectures in this city on the 8th and 9th of Angust. Tue steamer ‘‘M, A. Starr” arrived from Halifax this morning at 9 o’clock with a cargo of merchandise. She will sail at 7 o'clock this evening, with a cargo of 150 barrels of flour and a number of empty cash s Mr. JAMES Hennessy, laborer, met with a scrious and almost fatal accident in the Rail- way yard, at 9 o’clock this morning. He, in company witlothers, was unloading flat-cars of heavy lumber. About the time mentioned, a large log was lying on the ground about two feet from the car they were then unloading. Another log lay on the car close to the edge. As Mr. Hennessy was in the act of passing between the car and the log on the ground, the ove on the car, by some mishap; fell, struck Mr. Hennessy and knocked him partly over the log on the ground, and rested upon both his legs. When the log was remeved, it was found that one of his legs was broken at the thigh, and the other was seriously crush- ed. Drs. McLeod and Creamer were sum- moned; and, after setting the leg. had the un- fortunate man removed to his residence. The log which fellon Mr. Hennessy’s legs was ever twenty feet long, and nearly three feet in circumference. Had it fallen on any other part of his body save the legs, the injuries would, doubtless, have been fatal. Tur ecase of David Small vs. John Larter, for assault, was, to day, tried before Rowen R. Fitzgerald, Esq., J. P. for this Province. It appears that Larter was one of a large crowd who assembled on Shaw’s Wharf, West River, when the steamer Southport arrived there ,on hersecond trip, on Saturday last. Mr. Small requested those on the wharf to stand back and give the excursionists room to land safely. Larter refused; sharp words followed, and, latterly, Larter held his fist close to Mr. Smaill’s nese, shook it pugistically and threatened to throw him over the wharf. Mr. Small, in Court, complained of Larter’s conduct being generally disorderly en the picnic grounds. ‘the Magistrate ordered that he (Larter) should pay a fine of ten dollars, or be imprisoned in the common jail for twenty days. The number of young men whoattend, and destrey the pleasure of, picnicing parties, by their disorderly conduct, will make a note of this case and know that, no matter how far from the city the offence is committed, it is punishable on return of the party thereto. Joux McArsg, a boy of fourteen years of e, was tried to-day before the Stipendiary Bagistrate for stealing fifty dollars from his aunt—Miss Bridget O’Brine. Miss O’Brine stated that she arrived from Boston on Tues- day, the 15th, and ledged with her sister Mrs. McAree, mother of the prisoner, on Tuesday night. She missed the amount stolen on Wea nesday morning, and having a slight sus- picion of the prisoner, asked him if he had taken in. He acknowledged es fifteen dollars when first asked, and afterwards thirty dollars. She lost at the same time a small knife which she carried in the same pocket as the money. This knife was found on the boy's rson, and Miss O’Brine identified it as her's. While in custody the prisoner told the City Marshal that he had only taken fifty dollars ; that he lost a $20 bill, and that he gave a $10 bill and a $4 bill to his little sister. He took the Marshal to a field near the Kirk and re- coversd $1.75 in silver which he hid in the . The prisoner also told a boy named Samuel Collins that he stole the money from his aunt. He was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Civic. --Pursuant to notice, a public meeting of the electors of Ward Five was held at Mc.
