JOHN'S THE DAILY HE fELE GRAPHIC NEWS, Special Despatones to Taz EXAMINER. FIRE. The Roman Catholic Cathe- dral Not Burned. The Ratimated Loss. MEN AND CHILDREN BURNED Nfll., July 11. No pen can describe the appalling nature of the destruction and utter ruin which has overwhelmed the people of this city. Some 2,500 houses, public buildings, churches and business establishments have been cremated, with all their contents, and 14,000 people have been rendered home- less,of whom over 5,000 are absolutely des- titute. The Roman Catholic cathedral hes escaped. The scene during the fire was terribly grand, but is now terrifyingin the desolation that remains. Thousands of people who were in comfortable circum- stances are penniless and helpless to-day. Their houses, fuod, clothes and every- thing else was burned up before their eyes, and they barely escaped with their lives. Not only has there been an appalling destruction of property, the most terrible since the great Chicago conflagra- tion, but there was also deplorable loss cof hfe Two little children were burned to death, and five men were cither cremated or drowned By the burning of the steamer Sr. JoHN’s, Alert, the brig Dover, aud Harvey's coal hulk at the wharves it is feared that many other lives were lust which have not been reported. A man named Liadsay dropped dead from fright daring the fire, and a woman who fied for refuge to the open fields gave birth toa child, The total loss is roughly estimated at $15,000,000 and the ingurance at $6,000,000. The homeless people are now camped in open fields under such rough temporary shelter as could be im- provisec, LATER. Sr. Jonn’s, Nfli., July 11. It is by this course that Messrs. Tuckett & Son have secured the great success ot their ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobacco. This con- fidence is not only a source of business to the firm, but also a source of economy which the msumers get the benefit of. The merchant never loses moment of time in examining the quality of the tobacco, The name fixes the quality as absolutely as the mint stamp fixes the value of the guinea, It is pot even necessary for the commercial traveller's trunk to be burdened with a sample of ‘Myrtle Navy.” All his customers know what it is, and know in an instant when it has been supplied. There is no room for any dispute ahout it. No waste of time or postage in writing complaints abont it. These my look look like trifles to the uninitiated, but they save money, and enable merchants to perform the work of distribution at the smallest possib'e cost. They are part of the reasons why the finest quality of tobacco grown can be sold at so cheap a price. : ——_~s—-—=- For Over Fiery Years Mrs. Winsloes Soothing Syrup has been used by millions of mothers for their childrea while cutting teeth.
