A feiv weeks ago hls sister came to vlslt us. She ls crazy about him, as he is her only brother, and he ls devoted to her. He tells her things that he doesn't even mention to me. and while I am doing the housework they are in another room talking. Now she has declded that she will slay with us all winter and go to business school, my husband paying for everything, although she has a good home and her father is able to support hcr. This hurts me very much, as I had hoped to get a good start in married life and have been trying very hard to save something. What is your suggestion? JEALOUS WIFE ANSWER: N0 other one thing has wrecked so many marriages and broken up so many homes as family jealousy. In especial there is no other jealousy so devastating as that which a woman can feel for her son's wifo or which a wife can feel for her husband's mother and sisters. It is a strange thlng that we do not more fully recognize what a power for evll family jealousy ls and take more precautions to guard against lt. The young wife might, for instance, as in this case, try to realize that when a man marries he does not automatically break off all his old ties, The relationship between a brother and sister who are congenial and fond of each other, ls very close. They have grown up together. They have n thousand memories in common, and it ls natural when they come together that they should have endless things to talk about and enjoy each other's society. NO DANGER. But. if the wife will only look at this situation wlth clear eyes she will see that this does not endanger her own position. It doesn't show that her husband prefers hls sisters to her or loves her better or respects her opinion more. It ls just that the man and hls sister are in the habit. of tnlking things over and if the wife will listen-in she will discover that they are not discussing her faults, as she im- agiiies, but chatting about some perfectly innocuous thing. DEAR MISS DIX: I am a widower of 38, wlth two small boys. When my wife dled a widow friend of ours took charge of my home and children and she has been wonderful, companlonable, de- voted to my children who love her dearly. She ls 40. I did care for her and told her so and I believed she returned my affections, but now I have fallen ln love wlth a girl-of 23. She is lovely, but would she be a real mother to my children? ANXIOUS WIDOWER ANSWER: Undoubtedly, tho widow will make the better mother for your boys. She has age and experience and she will know how to manage them, whereas the girl of 23 wlll be totally unflttcd for the task, for being a stepmother isn't. the easiest job in the world and lt requires more tact and judgment and self-control than youth possesses. But an older woman, especially a childless widow, would, as a rule, have an unsatisfied mother love that she would lavlsh upon the children. They would take the place of the children that she never had and which she would never have. And life would have taught her s. patience and forbearance so that she would deal wisely with childish pranks. But, after all, you have yourself to consider. For lt does not take children long to grow up and go about their own affairs. So it ls more important for you to have a wlfe that you love and who sults you than lr. ls for the children to have a good mother. DEAR MISS DIX: I have a falr education and have always had a desire to be cultured and have intelligent people for my friends. I urn engaged to a. young man of 20 who has had only a grammar- school education and to whom Rembrandt, Shakespeare and Beethoven are only names. I want hlm to go to night school, to meet people, to absorb other ideas, to broaden himself. I do riot want. to always feel superlor to hlm as I do now. What can I do? I ' G RL ANSWER: Leave hlm alone ln peace. Marry some man whom you consider educated. No woman ls happy who ls married to a man she looks down upon, and every man ls miserable who has a superior wife who is always correcting hls grammar and hls pro- nunciatlon and hls manners. Being llfted up to a higher plane is a painful process. DOROTHY DIX cannot reply personally to readers, but wlll nns- wer problems of general interest. through her column. I write frcm time to time about the damage, not only to hearing but to general health, from noise. and have recorded the findings of the Noise Abatement Society of the United States, This organization had found that exposure to ex- tremely loud sounds over a long per- lod o! time results in Impaired hearing. The louder the sound, the greater the impairment or danmge over a. similar period. The longer the period o! exposure to the some sound level. the great/er ls the hear- lng impairment. The basic unlt of sound measure- ment is a. decibel. the lowest sound that oan be heard by the human ear. It ‘has been found that the noise level of an ordinary office ls about 40 decibels, that of a busy street. about t5 decibels and that of heavy traffic about 80 decibels. Rc~ search workers point out that the noise in a busy oflice lowers the working ability of the workers by as much as 40 per cent. Dr. W. E. While 1t ls only fair that workers whose hearing ls damaged by noise should receive compensation, there does not as yet setm to be oom- pensatlon to workers and others whose nerves are damaged by noise. As pointed out; before, the Creator fashioned us with nerves and musc- les so that when we hear a. noise our nerves and muscles might tense ln readiness to run or fight.
