Writer Those sunprising sons of Lester Patrick, working under the usual handicap that sons of celebrand fathers mustwork, have advanced to a point where they stand as probably the must unique brother wt in Canadian sport. If they are not super-all-rcund athletes, then that breed must be extinct. Last winter stories came out of New York to the effect that Mur- ray Patrick, younger son of the "O1d Fox." had box-fight aspira- tions. It was in the middle of the hockey season and the whole Pat- rick tribe was waist-deep in the sport. But Murray-or "Musa"-was telling Gotham sports wriwrs how he could box. Just the other day the husky 21- year-old youth wen the Canadian amateur heavyweight title at Ecl- monton by knocking out Tommy Osborne of Montreal in the final. Osborne, the best heavy in the east. had been flattening many of the best amateurs in eastem United States during the winter season. Twice in the first round he brought Murray to his knees. Once he nearly knocked Lest/er's son out of the ring. Old Lester was at the ringslde, too. lrimaeing as he does when his New York Rangers are taking a thumping in the National League hockey wats. In the second round Muza waded into Osborne and smashed him in- to defeat with a two-fisied attack. I-le dropped him with 9. mighty right and when Tommy staggered lo his feet this` Patrick clansman measured the Montrealer and put him away for keeps. So the Patricks made good again. It will surprise no one if, within s. few years, Lester is managing a. Ranger team on which his twof _sons, Lynn and Muzz, are playeml Hockey is the Patrick business and! favorite sport and Lynn has al- ioo. making s place on the Wheeler team of the Interprovincial Union. Then he decided he wanted to play professional hockey. He went to the Ranger training camp at Win- nipeg in the fall of 1934 to put his father definitely on the spot. Lester had a host of line smat- eurs to choose from and he finally selected Bert Connolly of Mono- ton Hawks and Lynn. The others were _not yet ready for the big league. he decided, and these two were. By choosing his own son the crafty Ranger boss put himself on the spot. Lynn shoved hirn off. ready made the grade. Raised in the to...perate climate _ ,of Victoria. where the only skating: `lce is artificial and the only h:ckeyl players are imported. there seemed, lltt‘,1 chance that Lmu and Muzz would ever follow the hockey tra‘_l| blazed by Lester and his brsiheri Frank. now manager of Bostonl Bruins. Shine In Many Fields . They promptly earned national reputations as baslnetball playersl fin the spring of 1933 they led Vic- toria Blueleibbons to the senior national championship. In 1934 they moved closer to natural ice and in' Montreal played both hockey and title, with the Patricks showing the way. and made a brave stand be-_ fore succumbing to Vancouver Pro- vince in th-i canadian final. Lynn played football that fall, £ "O 5 They booed him when he played first in Madison square Garden. When he found himself there was nothing to lt. He established him* self as one of the best rookies of the season and wound up New Yorl<'s high scorer in the play-oils. playing regularly beside Murray Murdoch and Butch Keellng. Murray spent the winter playing defence on the Brooklyn Hamilton- Cresmnt team, rated the strongest amateur outfit in the United Stltes. In view of what these astonishing brothers have already accomplished, it is a foregone conclusion that Musa will wear R-Luger livery pretty soon, too.
