MONTREAL (CUP) A tour of Canada by black South African officials has been denounced as a_pro- paganda ploy by local anti- apartheid groups. The three-week long visit featuring a delegation of four members of the Lekoa re- gional city council was spon- sored by South African busi- ness people. The delega- tion came at the invitation of the Canadian Friends of South Africa Society (CF- SAS), a Vancouver-based or- ganization. “These people are part of a massive propaganda cam- paign orchestrated by the South African embassy.” said Adrian Archer, a member of Concordia Students Against Apartheid. “They have no credibility in the black com- munity.” “JT have never even heard of these people before,” said Lisa Hardin, an executive for the McGill University South Africa Committee. “It seems their requests run counter to what has been advocated by other black leaders.” Calling the delegation’s appeal for “greater under- standing” between Canadi- ans and South Africans “hog- wash,” Archer said that the CFSAS had close ties with the South African regiine. ei s “The CFSAS is a right- wing group that is sometimes tied with Conservative politi- cians,” he said. “The South African government has been sending lies to these Conser- vative people.” The CFSAS was one of the organizers of last Anu- gust’s ten-day visit to South Africa by four Saskatchewan native leaders, said Archer. “No attempts to pump up a few puppet leaders will bring peace to South Africa,” he said. “They should be ashamed as black men to be touring Canada misinform- ing people. “Unfortunately, the South African government has more money than anti- apartheid groups to fund slick propaganda campaigns with brochures, pamphlets and touring visitors.” Referring to a statement by tour- member Esau Mahlatsi that “great strides have already been made in the dismantle- ment of apartheid,” Hardin said that “most changes are cosmetic like letting black people ride on buses but the structure hasn’t changed: at all.” “South Africa remains the only country in the world that has laws that segregate people written into its con- stitution.” 8 “ =—— —_ onan | AM LIBERATING Him FROM OPPRESSION T | AM PROTECTING HIM FROM COMMUNISM I = Page 12= eee —— Thursday, November 19 1987: —
