From Savannah to Jacksonville the travel- ler takes the Savannah, Florida & Western Railway, a distance of one hundred and seventy two miles, which occupies six hours, The country between these points is much like ail the rest of the Southern States whic: we have seen, being a succession: of pine landa, dismal swamps and boge, and requires a great deal of labor in the way of drainage and clearing to make it fit for the hoe or plow The is the h of the negro, the buzzard and malaria, 1. > too the festive mosquito roam- eth about in his shirt sleeves seeking whom he may devour, We are now vwoder the tropical sun of Florida—the lan «i tlowers, oranges alligators and Yellow Jack, The city of Jacksonville, in the northern part of the State, is the dis- tributing point for all travel to South and East Florida, and intermediate landings on the St. John’s River. Jacksonville is situated on the St. John’s River, twenty-five miles from its mouth. It has a population of about 30,000. Bay, Ocean and Pine are the principal business streets. Those streets are paved with cypress blocks, on end, which costs one dollar and two cents per square yard. The other streets bave simply the natura: paving (sand,) into which one sipks to the ankles, Most of the streets are well shaded by numerous stately oak and other native trees, among which are many orange trees, heavily laden with the “* golden fruit. Jagksonville is noted for its many large and elegant hote!s, some of which cover a whole bléck each. A good many of the invalids who come here for their health and stop at those hotels, find, when they are presented with their first hotel bill, that they have all at once become *healthy enough to Jeave for their homes by the early morning train, Jacksonville has water works, ‘‘ mule” cars, but no electric light, except a few lights which some of the larger stores and hotels run for their own convenience; the city being lit by gas, and that of a very feeble nature. Business is very dull in Jacksonville since the yellow fever epidemic. A good many business people have not returned as yet, but Yellow Jack will put in an appearance again this coming summer. Others have pulled up stakes and have settled down permanently in Georgia and other States. We have not met with a solitary person here who will admit that there was a case of yellow fever in Jacksonville; they say it was some othesbort of fever, for which they have not as yet given any name, That there was some deadly epidemio is, however. attested to by the flight of thousands from the city and the many graves of the victims which we have seen at the different cemeteries. It is now generally conceded that the epi- demic was firet brought here from Cuba, via subject to long swoons, is stillj asleep, this] Key West and Tampa, by an Irishman by the ? Little need be said regarding the climate of Florida, as everyone knows that it is fine. Frost is unknown in Southern Florida, and in the northern part of the State itis compara- tively light. We had a slight frost in Jack- sonville on January 28th and 29th, but the thermometer seldom falls below 30 above in dark closet. Late on Friday night last she took a big swallow from the wrong bottle. She was seized immediately with acute pains in her throat and stomach. S&., paper publishes a list of registrations in the office of the registrar of deeds, ete., for the county last year, from which it appears that upwards of 500 deeds were recorded. The mortgages recorded numbered only 72, and as the number of mortgages written off number- ed 62 the farmers of that county are evident- ly enjoying a prosperity quite in contrast with the stories that come to us from across the line. eccleadaiinlaitions Mopest.—Our American cousins are a very progressive people, especially when they work upon their imagination. Ina recent issue of the Chicago Western World a ‘ map of the the future great Republic of the United States of America” adorns the front page. In it they claim the whole of Canada, and grasp Iceland, Greenland, West Indies, etc., etc., as well. CanvcKk, Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 1, 1889. Pennsylvania Heard From. ‘READING, Jan,f28.—The Sheriff's office’ here is full of bills advertising the property of various farmers for sale. No Sheriff for years has been as busy as the present incumbent. It is estimated that he levied on the farms, stocks and agricultural implements of thirty to thirty-five farmers in the country in the last few months. Farmers say that farming no longer pay, and that they are obliged to go under. Farms which were purchased a few years ago for $175 per acre, now sell for about $125.” Says the Moncton Timee: This is not en- couraging news for our farmers, who are promised a market of ‘** 60 millions.” Don’t you think under the circumstances the farmers of the United States when they re depressed would keep their market to hemselves. _ Or? ee —__—_—_—_——— Eczema, Itchy, Sealy, Skin Tor- tures.
