The branch societies have not all re- ported for the year just ended but reports so far received show that the in- terest in the work of the Society is be- ing maintained. The total receipts for thi year were $637.84: fi r the previous year the receipts were $501.74. showing n gali- ior the year ef $135.10, This increase s due entirely to ihe increased llbaraliiy ofthe branches, as the collection for the eitv of Charlottetown showed a falling oil' $51). Y (Copyright, 1808, by American Prem Association.) How truly great he must have been of whom the angel Gabriel said: “He shall be great in the sight of the Lord, ' ° ° tllled with the Holy Ghost even from his mothcr’i-i womb, ° ° ° Many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God and he shall go before Him in the spirit# and power of Elijah" (Luke i, 15-17). Not only did the Spirit through Isaiah speak of htm as "the voice of Him that crleth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God!" but the Lord through Malachi laid lilo, “Behold l send lily messenger and he shiili prepare the way before Mo" (Isa. xl, 8; Mal. iii, 2). Our Lord Jesus said of him, "Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist" (Matt. xl, 11; Luke vii, 28). He was one of seven mentioned in Scripture ss named before their birth, he grew up in the desert till the day of his showing unto Israel. and at the appointed time he came forth hy the word of God (Luke i, 18, 80; iii, 2). When the priests and Levltea sent by the Jews asked him; “Who art thou! What asyest thou of thyself?" he re- plied tbat he was the voice of one cry- ing in the wilderness, foretold by Isaiah (John I, 19-23). His great cry was like that of our Lord Himself, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (verse 2 and chapter iv, 17). See also the preaching of the twelve and the seventy in Matt, xt 7; Luke x, 9. The King of the Jews had come to bring the kingdom to Israel, but be- cause they would not have either His herald or Himself He told them that the kingdom would not come till His return, and that Elijah would then be His herald (Luke xix, 11, 12; Matt. xvii, 11, 12). What John the Baptist in the spirit and power of Elijah wus to His first coming, Elijah himself shall bc to His second coming. By preaching re- pentance and remission of sins in Hia name among all nations all believers are now to prepare the way for His re- turn, that the kingdom may come (Luke xxiv, 4t¥48; Acts iii, 19-21: xvii, 80, 31), for the preaching during this age of n postponed kingdom is to gather from all nations a people for His nai e, the church, His body. and then He will return (Acts xv, 14-17). John was not of this world, either as to food or rnlrnent; his was no earthly royalty. Contrast what is said of the scribes in -Mark xii, 38, 89. He had no worldly ambition, no self seeking. no desire to draw men to himself, no envy when mon followed Jesus; but he glad- ly said that he was the friend of the Bridegroom who rejoiced greatly be- cause of the Bridegroom‘s voice, and delighted to decrease as He increased (John iii, 20, 80). Many from Jerusalem and Judaea and the region where John was baptiz- ing were led to confess their sins and receive baptism at John’s hands, but among the runny who came there were some whom John felt led to address as a generation of viper-s, the seed of the serpent. Our Lord also called them serpents, n generation of vlpers (Matt. xxiii, 33). and yet they were the most religious people of their day. But it was all outward, to be seen of men (Matt. xxiil, 5, 28). They boasted that Abraham was their father (verse 9: John viii, 33), but John told them that they must prove it by their conduct, and our Lord said' the same, but also told them that they were of their fa- ther the devil (John viii, 39, 44). There is no siilviiilon in any mere say so, or word of mouth, for although it is gloriously true that we are saved by faith and not by works, eternal life being the free gift of God. yet it is with the heart and not the mouth that we believe, and where there is real faith there will be a life corresponding (Rom. iv, 5: Eph. ii, 8-10; Tit. iii, 5, 8; Rom. x, 3-10). Our Lord also speaks of the harvest and the tire at the end of the age for more professors, the tures among the whoiit or the bad fish gathered in the net (Mutt. xiii, 37-42, 47-50). How awfully solemn nnd searching to hear Him who is love itself using auch words and declaring that He will have to say to some in that day, "Depart frem Me, ye cursed, into everlasting tire, prepared for tho devil and his angels" (Matt. xxv, 41). If unquench~ able tire, the lake which burneth with Bro and brimstone, tormented with fire and briinstone (Rev. xxi, 8; xiv_, 10. 11) and similar words are figurative, then it must be that the reality is ao nnutterahly awful that language can- not describe it. It must be a fearful thing to perish, else God would not have sent His son to suffer as Be did in our stead that we might not perish. We may well be thankful that the inks of fire was not prepared for man, and that God is not willing that any should perish (I Pet. iii, 9): but those who prefer the devil to God must be con- tent to lhara bil doom (Rev. xx, 10). Int ns be sure that we have truly received the only Saviour of sinners, and then yield' to Him to be iilled with Bio Spirit day by tiny. that like John we may truly honor and magnify Him 'whole shoes we are not worthy to bear, and if He shall with tire retina na and quicken us and cause the water of Bil word to boil in ua to make Hia name known (lim. lxiv, 2; iliph. v, 26), how we will praise Him in that day for all the piiina He took with ns and for any uae Ho made of us to help brim( Htl linldorni ROSS GOING T0 COUNTRY.
