He spoke of the Fair aa a grand educator, with privileges of listening to suchmen as Hon. J ohn Dry- den, Mr. Mills, Mr. Sparks and others whom he characterised as the cream of the country. He spoke of the marked improvement in the stock this year over preceding years as a result of education received on former occasions. THE FARMERS AND THE PACKING COMPANY . Sm.,--I have read a score or more letters on the troubles that exist between these parties, but so far none of the writers have offered a rolution. In The Guardian’s issue ol the 19th last., Mr. Stewart strikes at the matter ln a _very pointed manner; he doubts the ability of Mr. Wiley to tell before a hog is killed if it will turn out a soft or Arm carcass. Il Mr. Wlley’s ex- perience has not made him capable to discern in nine oxses out of ten the type and quality of carcass a certain hog will produce, he certainly requires more sympathy than he is getting. (Soft hogs _have been the great hugbear in the bacon industry of Canada). One of the best Nova Scotia buyers of Island pork bold me recently he got en- ough fish in one shipment to put him through the lanten season this year. He said he never knew before that we fed fish to our hogs; he knows now, and hera- aiter will buy our park with suspicion. Mr. Stewart says the question of weigh- ing is easily settled. This to my mind is one of the most troublesome features to be overcome. But when Mr. Stewart tells us that the price of all hogs from 150 to 400 lbs. must be the same and that the directors of ofrr cheese and butter factor- irs are to do the Inspecting, fix the prices I J " N14 U1!k0 "UBB, he simply makes propos- als that no Company that would ever be ,of any benedt to our Province would stoop i S to consider. .
