He was born at St. and Mary Veronica Bouthiller. In 1852 tien of the Uoly Cross. On the November, 1854, he made his and was ordained priest on the 29th July, | 1855. He arrived at Memramecook on the | 7th day of June, 1864, and opened the | classes of that institution on the 10th Oc- | tober of the same year, which foundation will be aa epoch in the bistory of the French Acadians of the Maritime Pre- vinces. The movement of intellectual pro- gress inthe midst of thixs yevple dates from that time. St. Joseph’s College is the first institution that has given to the Aca- dians the advantage of French education on an equal standing with the English Co!- leges. In 1871 Rev. Father Lefebvre was made provincial superior of his order in Canada, which position he filed until the spring of i880. In 1873, he went to France to re- cruit subject+ for his order; and in 1876 he was made Apostolic Missionary by the Holy See. Being an ardent preacher, the several missions that he conducted in differ ent parts of the country have always borne abundant fruit. It required nothing else but the energy ) of Rev. ©. Lefebvre to assure the success of | a college founded at such a date. Often he | loved to recall the fact that when he ar | rived at Memramcook to start a college all | he possessed was the insignificant sum of | $1.50. He trusted in Providence, and from that little acorn has +prung forth a | large tree, under whose shadow thousands | uf students have come to partake of the bread of religion and of intellect. The |}name of Father Lefebvre will occupy a prominent place in the history of this country, and the immense good that he has accomplished will endear his memory for generations to come. profession, SUPREME COURT. When the fleet of improvised Brazilian cruisers, dynamite and otherwise, was being fitted up at New York a year ago the magnificent yachtlike steamship Britannia, now the America, attracted almost as much attention as the Nicthe- roy, which had the dynamite gun aboard. She possessed an interesting history which was fruitful of disappointment and failures, and when it was announced in marine circles that the Britannia had been sold for $175,000 the nautical men who were acquainted with -the craft said she was well sold. She was described as a “brute” in heayy weather and reports from Brazil since hie that she has not improved. She ruined the man who con- ceived her construction. She waa dis- earded by the sultan of Turkey, who used her for several times as his private yacht aud she finally, after many adventures, drifted into the hands of a Boston firm, Her conversion into a eruiser of doubted strength and y-efulness is a matter of recent history. Now as the Hrazilian cruiser America she figures in a lawsuit. The Champion Derrick and Wreekia company is suing the owners of the vesse tor $9,900 commission for having sold her to the representative of the Brizilian government. - —_>- Goxe ro Jai..—Harry C.
