All newspaper readers are aware that the production of and the trade in sugar have been revolutionised bythe manufact- ure of sugar from beets. It appears that sugar can he still produced in the West Indies and other cane-sugar countries rather more cheaply than from the beets grown in Continental Europejlbut the Continental nations by giving bounties of from $6 to $20 per ton on the production of beet sugar have been able largely to in- jure the cane~sugar industry; and to practically destroy the sugar refining business in the British Islands. As a result of these conditions an anti- bounty league was some years ago formed in England, the object of which is to se- cure the abolition of the Continental sugar bounties. This can only be effected by treaty between Great Britain and! the countries consenting to abolish their bounty systems. But neither France, Germany, Austria. nor other of the bounty countries are willing to abolish t-he boun- ties unless they can secure admission of their beet sugar into the British market on more favorable terms than those countries which Istill retain the boun- ties. . Objection is taken to his proposition by the British free tralers as being contrary to the principles on which the British trade system is based. It will be seen that much the same principle is at issue as that on which political parties in Canada are divided in regard to preferential _tra.de. There is a considerable body of opinion in Great Britain in favor of giving preference to Colonial products from these Colonies, which admit British goods at a prefer- brought intothe British market. _ta.riffsystei1i. The anti-bounty league people think that if the bounties are not abolished by all or a. part of the countries. .- _now giving bounties that the bounty sugar ought to pay a duty on being Much might be and is said in favor of this proposition, but there are great difii- - culties in the way of carrying it out. If the course were once entered upon of meeting with British customs duties the bounties paid and the high import duties imposed by other countries, it must in the future, are certainly not prepared for such a revolutionary fiscal change at _ 1 _ l S. E. Prince S S. Association. The South East Prince Sunday School Association held their semi-annual convention in the Tryon Baptist Church on Friday July 13th, it being a decided success in every respect. The afternoon session was well attended, many :of the schools being fully represented. After devo- tional exercises led by Thomas Moyse, the minutes of last convention were read and adopted. An open conference on Sunday School management was then opened by Thomas Moise and carried on by Rev. F. A. Wightman, YV. B. Howatt, R. Lea. James Morrison, Lewis Trueman, Peter Howatt, Major Lowther and others, re- ferring chiefly to financial management, use of blackboard in school division of classes and running of schools during winter months, the discussion being very instructive. The meeting then adjourned to meet at 7.30 p. rn. The evening session was very largely attended. The principal features of the program were as follows: An address by Rev. F. A. YVightman on How can the Home Help the Sunday School? This subject was nobly dealt with, lacking no point that would be of any benefit. The close attention of the congregation showed that all were interested. A short paper was then read by Hermas Myers followed by a. short discussion. Last but not least was an address on Re- sponsibility ofthe Teacher by Rev. Mr. Robertson who discussed it in a very satisfactory manner. All were pleased with the eloquent remarks made by him and also by Rev. Mr. Dawson endeavoring to show forth the great good that should follow this convention. The meeting closed by benediction.-H.
