In 1910-11, the number ol marriages solelimiied in this province was 188 altogether; for' this year, so far as it has gone, the marriages registered have totalled just over ifty more. From the stand- . \ poliit of the political economist, an \ 5 ,N increase in this direction furnishes . . , 6 vidence of an improvement in the material condition of the' community or country concerned. There are some interesting facts to_ be gained from the figures of the mar- riage returns _for this year. Of the 240 marriages thahhave been record- ed up to the present, hbout' 'I0 were soleihnised in Charlottetown, /in com- parison with 82 in Summerside. These two towns therefore are re- pousible for close on one-half of the ,s total number. How the returns show as regards the respective months is of interest, particularly in view of the superati-_ tions trend of human belief in these matters. The greatest number ol marriages in a single month up to the present was recorded in June, which therefore maintains its reputa- tion as being one of the most favor- ite mouths, if not the most favorite, superstition, to be married in June; with brides. It ia good, runs popular the belief is that the couple united within that period will be blessed with an unusuall happy union. Ap March are not mon s n vor or the consummation of such events; in .»i~l‘r-5 the returns under notice there were 'V ii ’ , only two weddings recorded for Jan- uary, an equal n_umber for March, and even fewer, by one, for February, Eli lliliiiii. In this mouth this yenrthere were roughly 80 weddings celebrated.~ But supersti- tion gets a nasty knock-in the face with rega‘rd to the months of May and July. The latter ie an accredited unlucky period for the contraction of. conjugal alliances. Yet-within this period there, were ‘ nearly as many marrlages_as there were in June, the figures being 45 to 47. “Merry in May ' And you'l1 rue the day.” thirty couples in this Island who had no use for such a warning; they got September. To marry in this month also it is regarded as particularly auspicious; there were 41 weddings solemuised last September. In August there were 26; in October up to date there have been 17. These figures may not, it may b stated, be absolutely reliable, as mer- riage officers fare not particularly prompt in making their returns to the Registrar, and there may be some yet to be sent in that have been re- corded two or three weeks or even months ago. For example it may he. stated that one/ of the marriages put on record this ycarwae contracted as far back as August 1887, over a quarter of a century ago.
