Why it is ? t in buying of] Why, indeed! Jecause the peddier or faker knows the article he has to sell. He knows} its good points and tells them. If he is selling a patent soap, he tells what coy hy people ers peddlers and fakers | that good for, and tells why it is better than other soaps. If its a patent whistle ora toy balloon he tells why it’s better than those shown ' He handles his subject as though it were worth handling. In fact , he does just what many advertis ers failto do. He goes into his sub ject understandingly, enthusiastically, and one of the sreasons he succeeds 1s because the buyer knows from the start that the peddler means business. Don't borrow all the ideas of the faker, though. He has bad ones. In his en- thusiasm he frequently overestimates sOap IS } . petore the qualities of his wares. If he ex- pected. to come that way again he would probably be more careful. ‘The business man expects to meet his cus- tomers again. Ile wants his goods and his advertisments to show their relation to one another. The man whocan ex tract the good points from the faker’s methods and eliminate the bad, has a start that will land him safely on the successtul side of commercial life.— Advtg. World. Advertiser and Adwriter. The advertising points must come within the business. The business man who expects the adwriter to evolve something out of his own inner con- sciousness, something that will sell goods, is making a fatal mistake. What the business man needs is not so much smartness, or novelty, or originality, buta plain and cenvincing statement of the real facts about his business. What the adwriter needs is a know- ledge of the stock, the principles and the aims of his customers. He must give the advertisements the tone of the store He must make his announce— ments serve as real representatives of a real store to real people. Ifhe has an honest, earnest desire to be helpful to his advertisers, he will fisd his oppor- tunities develop as his acquaintance develops. The proper study of a busi- ness writer is business—business first writing afterward. There are thou- sands andjthousands of people who can write first rate. An advertisment writer doesn't need any particularly transcendent literary ability. If he has this ability, so much the better, but he can write good ads—effective ads— selling ads, if he knows enough about the English language to say plainly and strongly what he means. Fine writing is not necessary. It is not even desir- able.—Bates. The man in business who doesn’t know much about his business, is wise in covering -his ignorance by filling his advertisments with matter entirely foreign to that business. But the man who knows about his stock and _ its strong points, will find it profitable to tell what he knows about it. Any re— liable statement about the goods sold gives the man who makes the state— menta standing as an authority on that subject, and people naturally come te him for goods in that line. The old saying, “All things come to DA he x and waits, misses desirerable oppor tunities, and, and his dependents an injustice does his business. —Advtg. World. Dont Claim it all. Don’t claim too much in your ad. Talk clearly and as interestinely as pe ssible about the good points of yout goods, Talk exactly as you would to a Tell of the en stoc k customer before you. deavors you make to have your the best. Even tellif you wi you claim your store or stock the best. Tell facts, quote prices, and let the buyer judge whether ,or not your claims are Jogical. But don’t claim it all. You won’t be believed anyway. Advertising World. From day to day there are a thousand and one little things that a housekeeper has to buy, and she depends quite a good deal on the advertisments to re mind her of these things. Real good advertising always has and always will, pay a handsome profit but you must look at it an investment, and nurse it as you would any other part of your business.— Requisites.
