SATURDAY Historian Tells How Whale Bone Fooled Science (By The Canadian Press) _ SAINT JOHN, N. 8., July 9 — Research by Fred M. Cochrane. President of the New Brunswick Historical Society, reveals that whaling provided the port of Saint John with a flourishing industry a century ago and that science was the butt oi an Irlshmanb hoax when square-rigged Whalers rested in Saint John harbor. In 1839 some mischievous-mind- ed individual placed a whales jaw- bone in a pile of cordwood being sawn by the Irishman. Pat 00m- plalned that one "stlck” was so hard he broke a saw before cutting through it alter an hour's labor. When he learned what the “stlck" was he passed the joke alonZ. selec- ting a distinguished geologist and naturalist as the next victim. This authority, told that the ob- ject had come down from Grand Lake, N. B., in a load of cordwood. pronounced it to be the shin bone oi a. mastodon. The excited geolo- gist vislted Grand Lake several times, digging for other remains. Unsuccessful in this, he wrote articles concerning the “remarkable discovery" and eventually became involved in international, scientific debate on the subject. What the distinguished geologist said when the secret leaked out is not re- corded. From 1830 to 1850 whaling brought fat profits to stockholders in‘Saint John. In 1841 one com- pany declared a dividend of 20 per cent on the paid-up capital. The next year it was 14 per cent. A sldellght mentioned in old doc- uments and newspapers ccmcerns special ship's bread, or hsrdtack. made here for the whalers. Some of these biscuits, left over at the end oi’ a voyage lasting nearly three years, were reported in good con- dition when the ship returned. Among the most successlul whal- ers operating out oi Saint John was the James Stewart. In 1840, alter a voyage of 20 months, she brought home 2,700 barrels ot oil worth $80,000. Five years previously she returned with i270 barrels of black oil. 530 barrels o! sperm oil and 20,003 pounds o! whslebone af- ter a trip oi only nine months. It came from a. prisoner who collapsed a moment later when he learned for the first time of his mother's death three weeks ago. Judge Thomas Cotter ordered an immediate examination. Prosecutor Duncan McOrea said Goodrich would be bnough to trial promptly. "I am seeking s. way to make oer- tain that this man never goes free again," he remarked. The surprise plea also upset for the time being plans for an inquiry into Goodrichb sanity. and into that o1 his wile, who is held as a materiel witness. Wild Mustard Eradication Wild mustard, an insidious weed whim grows puolliicully through- out Canada. on farms and waste places, is one of the commonat and most injurious o! the mustard family.
