You placed inc, at,niy request, in command of 8. division of the army, and you supported the exercise of my authority in that posi-. tion with all the weight of an iiilltiencc such as no otliei- European otlicer eve.r enjoyed in this country. At length, when the word “ surreiidei-” was uttered for the first time, you enabled me to leave the beleaguered garrison on grounds personal to myself. For all this, my acknowledgineiits aro_due, and far be it from me to withhold them Now, however, it new aspect is given to our mutual relations by one ofyour publis|i- ed speeches, if correctly reported. After mentioning Colonel Lake, an engineer of great inei-it; the lamented captain Thomp- son, wliosu: premature deinii-ie is by me, as by all, regretted; the young Major Tees- dale, whose valour -".lltI coolness give the best promises; Mr. (Ilium-liill, a gentleman who doubtless rendered you iinportant ser- vice in his functions of secretary; and, finally, llr. Sandwitli, an able and indefati- gable physician—rifter bestowing on all these, I say, a well deserved tiiecd of praise, you introduce my name, as if half-forgotten, and as if of one who had contributed but little to the events of the caiiipaigu. Ulld3's- these circumstances, I can no longerlkeep silence without losing my self respect, iiud I find myself, though most un- willingly, constrained to call upon you, with all due deference, to complete the tatements of facts which have appeared, and more especially those concerning the battle ofthe 29th September, I855, in which the part taken by me will no doubt on con- sideration appear to you, as it does to me, imperfectly reported. lbuilding was cut oil, and they were all coiisumed iii the fliiiiies. The fire coin- inenced at eleven 0’;-lock at night, and by one o'clock, the building, with nearly al its coiitents, was consumed. The build- ing was (’l!Ill't"ly of wood, and wire raised on piles driven inio the sand. Upon the ground beneath the first floor, the shavings and strips which had accumulated while btiilding, had been left. The fire it is be- ltievcd, originated among these sliuvings, near the centre, and it took but a short time to spread over such inllamiiiable mate- rials as composed the building. The wiv blew blazing embers and light shingles 0 it great distance, but tortunatrly no other houses on the Island was injured. This "calamity should awaken serious consider- ation iii reference to the dangers incurred lat most of the watering places, owing to ‘the hotels being built of wood. At Cape illlny, all the largest houses are constructed oftliis combustible material. and yet some ‘ofthem have sleeping apartments four and five stories from the ground. Should a fire occur, when one ol these enormous piles of wood is crowded with boarders, what would be the chance of escape ? Even so vast it structure as the Mount Vernon was burned down within two hours. Any other would have been ii heap ofblackened ruins with- in a single hour. Some of the hotels have it staircase running, down outside of the building. Others in default of this keep each story nuinerously supplied with buck- ets filled with water. But these would be but small aids in case of such a confl.igra- .tion as that which annihilated the Mount Vernon. Something more is needed to,as- sure our citizens, that the hotels ofa plea- sure pluce shall not become funcrcal piles. —-:0 DEATIIOP Dir. BUCKl.AND.—The Rev. Dr. Buckland, Dean of \\'estminster, but better and more widely known from his works on the science of geology, died at Clapham on Thursda the l~lth instant. _ IfI have not taken this course sooner, it is also partly because on perusing your dcspatchc: in the blue-book, I regarded“ them as the report: of a British commissi- oner concerning his own services and those of other British oflicers, with which it was no business of mine to interfere. only from another of your public speeches, in _which you talk of the Turkish troops being under your command, that I learn‘ that these reports can be taken as those of the commander-in-chief of the army of _ar:._ As such, I hold that an otiicer ser- ving in that army, although not having the honour to be it ritish oflicer, has an incon- trovertiblc right to come forward and re- quire, that all chief questions relating to it :lIot_ild be placed on a distinct and accurate footing. I have the honour to remain, sir, your very obedient humble servant, IORGI KMITY. Late Hungarian General. To M:'or.Gcn. Sir Win. 1'‘. Williams. Ssrt., II. ., K. C. 13., Ste. &c. &c. London. He was born at Axminster, in the year I784, and received his early education at \Vinchester School, whdnce he removed to Oxford in 1801. He took his degree of B. A. in 1805, and was elected Fellow of his College in 1808. In ISI3 he was appointed Reader in Mineralogy, and in ISIS Reader in Go- ology, to the University. In 1825 Dr. Buckland vacated his fellowship by accept- ing the living of Stoke Charity, near \V_hit- church, Hunts; in the same year he was promoted to a canonry in the Cathedral of Christ Church, and married Mary, the eldest daughter of Mr. Benjamin Moi-land, of Sheepsteiid-house, Abingdon. In 1856 he published his Brid ewatcr Treatise, entitled, “ Geology and inerulogy, consi- dered with reference to Natural Theology." In I846 Dr. Buclrlnnd was preferred by the late Sir Robert Peel to the Deanery of lvestminster, vacated by the promotion of Dr. Samuel Wilberforce to the Episcopal bench .— Times.
