2 Farming. The possible results to be achieved by farming, on a small seale, and by owners of limited farms, are well illustrated by the State of New York. In the State the great majority otf the farmers are small, ranging from ten acres to two hundred, the average being something under fifty acres. According to the returns, the total quantity of land culti- vated in farms was 18,000,000 acres, and the number of farms was 377,000. The total products of these eighteen million acres were valued at $178,025,095. Only one other state, Illinois, which has 26,- 000,000 acres cultivated, produced more than New York. The acreagefcultivated in [ilineis was 40 per cent., more than in New York, but the value of the pro- | ducts was only 13 per cent. more. This illustrates the difference between large and small farms; in the ease of the latter, every acre can be brought under close and direct supervision. New York, while not a great grain state, produces one-seventh of all the hay of tue country, and that indicates a large dairy business which is generally more profitable than grain growing. New York produces nearly one-seventh of all the butter, and nearly one-third of all the cheese made in the United States. a How to Grow Rich. Nothing is more easy than to grow rich, It is to trust nobody, to befriend none, to get everything and save all you get, to stint ourselves and everybody belonging to us, tobe the friend of no man, and to have no man for our friend, to heap interest upon in- terest, to be mean, miserable, and des— pised, for some twenty er thirty years, and riches will come as surely as disease and disappointment. And when pretty near enough wealth is colleeted by a disregard ofall the charit’es of the human heart, and at the expense of every enjoyment, save that of indulging in miserable meanness, death comes to finish the work, ani the body is buried in @ hole, the heirs rejoice over it, and the spirit goes—whither? Like a Christian. I heard of two little children—a boy and girl—who used to play a great deal together. Oneday the boy came to his mother and said{: ‘*Mother, I knew Emma is a Christian.” “What makes you think so, my child ?” “Because, mother, she plays like a Christian.” “Plays like a Christian?’ said the aad the expression sounding a little “Yes,” replied the child; “if you take nee she’s got, she don’t get angry. fore she was selfish, and if she didn’t have everything her own way she would say: “I won’t play with you ; ‘you are an ugly little boy.” Ai A Yell the Truth. A boy twelve years old was the im- portant witness in a law suit. One of the lawyers after cross-questioning him severely, said :— “Your father has been talking to you, and telling you how to testify, hasn't he ?” * Yes,” said the boy. * Now,” said the lawyer, * just tell us how your father told you to testify.” “Well,” said the boy, modestly; “ Father told me the lawyers would try and tangleme in my testimony; but, if I would just be careful, and tell the truth, I could tell the same thing every time.” HALIFAX & LONDON.
