The oldest bank notes in the world ar
issued in China in 2897 ILC. One write
_ tells that the ancient Chinese bank note
were in many respects sinillar to those o
the present day, bearing the name of th
bank, the date issued. the number of the
note, the siguiture of the official who
issued it, and its value _in both figuers
and words. On the top of these curious
notes was the following philosophic in-
junction; "Produce all you can; spend
with economy." The note was priiiteil
in blue ink on paper made from the fibre
of the niiilberry tree. One of these notes,
hearing the iltitc of 1390 ILC., still prcscrv
ed in the Asiatic Museum at St. Peters-
