Now and then Anne would say, "Stop it, Jerry." and he would stop for a moment. and flatten him- self on the shelf and look down at her with his cpai eyes. Then pre- sently the tlnkling would begin again and there would seem to be reflected Jerry at his play. Then all at once in the mirror came the dark head of Garry. It was such a good looking head. Anne had to admit that, Smooth black hair. a bronze skin. a thin line of black mustache above the lip. so far Garry's looks did not differ greatly from these of many of the young men of Anne's own particular group. It was his eyes that set him apart from the others. Gray eyes. long-lashed, with an intent look that seemed to attract even while it repelled .Vicky had said of Garry's eyes. "They are as changeable as his nature.” ' Anne resented that. "Garry's not changeable." And Vicky had replied. "Well. youlll have to find it out for your- self. Anne.” Now Garry was saying. "Wh.V don't you make that darned Cal behave?" "He's my cat, Garry." "He'll break those crystals." "Oh, well give him,to me." Garry picked Jerry up gingerly and dropped him into Annels lap. He had an almost abnormal dislike of cats. and this featherweight kit- ten made his flesh crawl. He was not aware that jealously might have something to do with it. To see Anne lavish affection on anything or anybody emphasized unbearably his own frustration. He eontrolled himself with an effort. "Your mother sent me to ask if you'll ride with us In the morn- ing. She has asked David. we're to have coffee first and then come back here for waffles and honey." "oh!" And how you've got to watch your step. or you'll be marrying him." she shrugged her shoulders. "why not?” "Because I don't want you to marry anybody. I want you just to keep on being yourself." She flashed a smiling glance at him and he smiled back. Darling David! Her fears left her as he sat there talking quietly.
