Stewart. POLITICAL CAREER Dr. MacMillan'a political car- eer began in I923 when he came a member for,Charlotte- town and Royalty and a non-port- folio member of the Stewart gov- ernment. In 1927 the government Conservatives who were elected. In 1931 the Stewart Governmem again came into being following victory at the polls and it was then that Dr. MacMillan took the portfolios of health and edu- cation. When Premier Stewart became ill in 1932 Dr. MacMll- premier and he succeeded to the Premier- ship on Mr. Stewart's death In 33. The Lea-Campbell government held office from 1935-39 without a single Opposition member. but m(n'e in 1939 Dr. MacMiIIan was again el ted as I member for Fifth Queens and held the seat con- tinuously until 1955. He was Len- der of the Opposition until 1950. A terrific worker. Dr. MacMil- lan often shouldered tremendous burdens. He was Premier. Prea- ident of the Council. Provincial Secretary. Provincial Treasurer. Minister of Education and Minia- ter of Health e same time. An ardent Conservative in pol- itics and an outspoken champion of his party on many a platfonn and in many a debate. he gave strong and unqualified support in- ter to the Public Health Grants. a measure introduced by a Li- beral administration at Ottawa and administered in this province by another Liberal administration His own comment on this ma fer at one time was. "I was con- demned by my own party and I told them I would only be a hy- pocrite to oppose in the Legisla- ture ihe very many expenditures I had been recommending as a member of the Provincial Advis- ory Committee.
