Gold 1425 Silt:— Thorc is a peculiar feeling of pleasure experienced by ever one on being' micx- peetcdly thrown into contact with esteem- ed friends or acquaintances offormer days. It carries us back in imagination to thoso sunny spots and placid nooks, in the otherwise rugged and stormy streams of life, which we have mutually enjoyed in those days that now, alas! are gone, gone forever. Such wot-odours oi the emotions which thrilled our breasts in this community on Thursday last, when we roeoived a flying visit from our formerly \vcli kIMWlI all“ esteemed literary friend, Mr. James PW- teons, of St. John, N. 11., who some 15 years ago resided at Traveller‘s Rest on this Island, at which time the members of tho Bedeque " Literary and Scientific Socioty“ were more than once delighted, improved, and strengthened by means of this able, eloquent, and scientliio lecturer 0n the do above mentioned Mr. Por- teous verbal y gave notice to a. few of his friends that he would iavor us with a leo- turo in the Temperance Ilall the following evening, on the " Atmosphere,“ and altho’ the notice was so short and informal, there was quiet a respectable audience gathered, whose attention was soeomplctoiy rivcttcd that there was not the least move in tlic whole building, while the learned lecturcr logically, eloquently and subliniciy, por- trayed the goodness and bcneiiecnoc of the great Creator, as exhibited in tile dit— forcnt. properties and qualities of that. sea of other in which we live. and move, and is so indispensable to our very existence. It is not my intention to give an analys- is Wscturo. notice it to- say that the 100mm. requii'cd‘to ba‘ heard to be appreci- ated... There was one feature however that debuth passing notice, and that was the void of pqu piety that ran through and pervaded tho‘whoie discourse, it up- prared the object '01 the lecturer to lead us upward and onward through labyrinths of nututge up to nature‘s God—to impress upon us higher and nobler views 01 the perlc‘ctipn‘ot the Diety. and more bumbling views 0 ourselves.
