Hodson, now holds an important defence post on Canada's west coast. B/L Hodson was taken to Canada when he was about a year old, and he grew lip and went to school, in London, Ont. He started his uni- versifyv career at the University of Wvstcrn Ontario, and was graduat- ed from Dalhousle University in I937. "I started in st Nova Bcotia Technical college after that, but the course vms too tough, so I join- ed the air force." he says. He became a member of the per- manent force January 3. i938, and took his training at ‘Ihenton. He was categorized as an instructor when he graduated in March, i939. and was sent to Winnipeg to take an instructors‘ course. In May of the same year he was sent to Camp Borden as an instructor. Worked st His “Trade” He "worked at that trade.” for s while, to use his own words, at Eorderi, and at the Central Flying cliool at Trenton, Ont. In December of i939 the Com- monwealth ‘Ii-nining Plan was born. however, and the first of the schools to be completed was the Service Flying Training school at Uplands. Ont, just outside Ottawa. Under Group Capt. Frank Mcflill. Hod- ron was on the staff which opened the school. He left Ottawa at Christmas time gig same year, and went to oln o. B Service Training Schoo at voncton, opened under W/C W. . Brown. A short time afterwards he became chief instructor there. and remained at this job until No- vember, 1941, when he left for over- seas. He did not give up flying even for the crossing. however. He was attached to R. A. F. Ferry Com- nd, and was assigned as second r —-¢_.—- w ‘i-k Y‘? pilot o! s Illberator. It raiti . es him to think that, arrlveiiiglangena western British airport, he stepped out of tlie 50,000 pound Liberator “"0 =1 UHV ruiiuliout aircraft, which he admits must have weighed about 1,200 pounds Wli-il him in it_ After a period at an operational training unitnledrnlng the tricks of the fighter pilot's trade, he was Posted to an R. A. F. squadron headed by Fliiucane. Enthusiatla About R. A, F. He had three months with this unit. but he refuses to discuss it. He describes his work at that time as “a few sweeps over Franco," but already history IiClS recorded that this squadron did a bit more that. He is enthusiastic, however. about his associations with the Royal Air Force. June 3rd of this year he was Ilflmfd Squildfon commander. It was indeed a high honor. of which he is duly appreciative. The squad- ron, which cclcbraicd iii-e second anniversary of its arrival iu Bri- tain, has set up a fine record for itself. It, was outstanding in the Brittle of Britain. A number of its pilots have worn the small purple and white ribbon denoting the z1~ ward of the Distinguished Flying: Cross, including F/L E. L. “Jecp" Neal of Quebec and F/L Ian C, Ormston cf Montreal. Already the big, curly-haired. quiet-spoken commanding officer is opular with his new unit. He ns n reputation of doing more listening than talking, but when you get him on the subject of the training plan that is another thing. , TAKE TWO COMMANIIING .. ..
