—————e ne HE DAITLUY Death of a Prominent Newfound. Special Notices. lander. A telegram from Newfoundland ar- nounces the death at St. John's, Dec. | Sih, of the Hoo Char'ies Fox Bennet, at at one time Premier of Newfoundland, | ‘ir. Bornet was a native of Bristol, Eng., and commenced lite in Newtound- lend, in eonneetion with the fishing business, bis tirm having had very ex- tenstve dealings with the Spanish ports. Inu recent years he has taken a great ins- trest in the development of the mineral wealth of Newfoundland, and was most successful in the department of copper miniag. He was the priocipal owner of the celebrated Betts’ Cove cop-| per mioe, whieh yielded large returns | to its proprietors, aod, in fact, had min- | ing interests a!l over the Island. He took a prominent part in Newfoundland | wolities at the time it was proposed to | {" ing the Island into the Canadian Con- | ' federation, and probably did more than | was Jone by any other man to prevent | the consummation of the scheme. Ulti-| mutely the Shea-Whiteway party re-| gained the ascendancy in Island polities, but Mr. Bennet always enjoyed the con- | fidence of a large section of the people of Newfoundland aod was repeatedly | elected to the House of Assemfily. | Doubtless on aeeount of bis uge,—as he | was ninety years old at his death—he| did nt offer at the lastyeneral election. | The late Mr. Bennet was a strong mind-| ed, strong witled Enytishman, but thor-| oughly devoted to the intrests of New| foundiand ;ard his death is a great public less.— Montreal Herald, A New Discovery. —-- One of the most valuable discoveries recently made by practical men of science is, a meuns of lighting up the! human body with electricity in such a manner that the physician or surgeon | ean clearly see the tield in which he js| to operate. The advantage of such a discovery cannot be over-estimated, as it isa fact, admitted even by the pro- fessional gentlemen themselves, that they often fail to relieve pain becauseof being compelled to work “in the dark, and when treating an interps!] ailment they are as likeiy to injure as to benefit the patient wi.b experimental prescrip- tions. With the new aparatus, how- ever, there is.myu need to grope in the dark, and troubles of the ear, nose, throat and ether organs can be so illumined that the operator can clearly see the Tainumate parts. . The adaptabiluy of the electric light that is of the ineandescent order is so apparant that it is a matterr of surprise that amanof medicine wes not the diseoveror of its valuable propreties. The instrument when used upon the human body may be inserted in various ways, It contains ai one end in adjective which forms on image of the portexamined. It permits of the il‘umiaation of the walls of the stomach and ibe consequent examination of the same by the aid of lense. The light is very clear, said to be in no way injurious and shows the parts in their proper colors. ------8 > o- Serious Result from a Hen Peck. About two months ago, Mrs, Joho Preston of Gwynedd, Pa., was pecked by a Len on the index finger of her righthand. The blow did net break the skin, but cansed a very slight bruise. Nothing was thought of so trifling a wound until a few days after it was in- flicted, when the finger began to pain and swell. The pain inereused until it became ulmost unbearable, end the pain did not cease until it had extended up the arm to the shoulder, whea the fingure burst from the knuckle joint to the tip, and began to discharge + purulent substance. Although the patiest had been under constant treat- ment by askilfal and successful physi- cian from the start, the sore shows but little evidence of healing, and renders her almost powerless to do anything. There aresome rich people in the world who huye made their mony so rapidly that their brains have not had a chance to grow in proportion. They live in magnificent houses, but the arrange- ment of the furniture is all left to the taste of a genthman whe makes such mattersastudy. The house does pot represent the family, and is no more the expression of their artistic developmenst thea are the furnished rooms of a house One of thee queer folk sent his daughter to a boarding school, and after a while the teacher told the mother, as delicately ax possible, that the real trouble with the giri was that she had nocipacity, *Well,” suid the good woman, “*l blame yen, sir, for net hav- ing mentioned this before, Her father has anabuodance of means, and can afford to purchase his daughter the finest capacity there is in the marked, I beg yon to git one for her immediatly, cost what it may.’ Horsford’s Acid Phosphate IN LIVER AND EID¥YEY TROUBLES.
