OW THE COMMANDER OF H, M. & FLYING FISH STOLE A MARCH ON THE RUS SIANS, The following extract from a_ letter from an officer in H. M. S. Flying Fish giving an account of the hoisting of the flag on the latest British possession, will be interesting to many of our readers :-— “We returned to Manilla for coals, ete., about April 2, and found two urgent telegrams from the Comman- der-in-Chief ordering us up to Hong Kong at fullspeed. The only incident worth mentioning on the passage up, was sighting a Russian ironclad (the Minin) just outside Hong Kong. The captain sent for the first lieutenant and ordered him to clear for aciion, re marking. ‘It’s most unfortunate but we must take a running fight of it.’ Yoa can imagine the 64-pounders (two in pumber) being loaded, hen-coops,ete., shoved out of the way, and the pcor old fish trying to imagine herself a fighting ship. However, we were not molested, but got to our journey’s end in peace and safety. On arrival at Hoag Kong, we found things hdd sim- mered down a bit ; however, inea day or two afresh scare took place, and we got telegraphic orders from the Commander-in-Chiet to hoist out chart- honse, cook-house, steam-house, ete., and replace two 7-inch guns, which we accordingly did, working day and night and making Jif unbearable. As soon as the job was over and we expected to geta rubof paint and settle down as part of the Houg Kong defence, we suddenly got orders to be ready for sea the next day. They filled us up telow and on deck with mines, electric cables, and torpedo stores. During our refit Rooper and Lyne had gone through a ten days’ Whitebead course, fondly im- agining that they would have charge of some of the torpedo boats in case of war, Dut they were sent off all the same. The ship was provided with a tender in the shape of a big steam-launch, purchased from the Hong Kong Gor- ernment. Of course our orders were sealed, but it was an open secret that we were bound for port Hamilton, which we eventually fetched, having only encountered one gale of wind in route, which campetied us to run inshore to rescue our tender. At Port Uamilton we found four or five small craft and a lot of timber sent over from Navasaki for the defence of the port The flagship was at Nagasaki, so we fouud ourselves senior Officer, and at once set to work tolay down the mines and build the booms wherewith to block the smaller entrance. | was told off with the captain of the Merline and an exgunner to fit and lay the mines; and thanks to the first-rate. Gunn made us a plan and sounded out the mine field on a 20- inch scale, and we hada Corean junk refuge, with commodious sail-rigged houses to shelter our mines and cables all conveniently situated on a emall island handy by the main entrance. Ope night we had agrand scare. A steamer was secn coming in about 9 p.m.,and on being boarded proved to be a Russian tran- sport, putin fas the captain,a naval officer said) on account of leaky boiler’. Ile (the captain) also wanted to land and look around ; bet as he might have had a Russian ensign in his poeket was advised not to tillhe had called eathe senior officer. Meanwhile, all the five small craft and our own powerful vessel] had been cleared for xetion in accordance’ with private signals which we had made, and in the dead of night three parties were landed to hoist Union Jacks, so that in the morning the summits of the three islands were decorated with our glorious flag, and a sentry looking after each of them. ‘The Ruskie came on board in the morning and congratulated our captain on the latest British possession, and not getting much change out of him, he and a Japanese man-of-war cleared out to inform their respective Governments, and we were left to con- tinue our operations in peace. _-_- Special Notices. The workl is wiser now, and knows that SCROFULA ean only be cured by a thorough purifica- tion of the blood. If this is neglected, the disease perpetuates its taint through generation after generation. Among its earlier symptomatic developments are Eczema, taneous Eruptions, Tu- mors, Boils, Carbuncles, Erysipelas, Purulent Ulcers, Nervous and Phy- sical Collapse, etc. If allowed to con- tinue, Rheumatism, Scrofulous Ca- tarrh, Kidney and Liver Diseases, Tubercular Consumption, and yari- ous other dangefous or fatal maladies, are produced by it. Ayer's Sarsapariifa Is the only poner ul and always reliable y blood-purifying medicine. King Cooking Stove, with the even, end and iming partially drawn out, as it appears wil (WHE above Stove I invented and patented in 1876, and at the present time HUN- DREDS ARE IN USE, giving perfect satisfaction. A large number have been in contant use for eight years, and the repairs have been very trifling, in many instances none have been required, ‘This valuable experience should be sufficient evidence of thelr durability, which is accounted for in the following :—It has, instead of a Lined Fire Box, two heavy Currugated Cylinders, which obviate the expense connected with all Square Cooking Stoves of being compelled to renew Linings and (Grates, at least once or twice every year, The heat being radiated from the Cylin- ders to the floor, where most needed, overcomes a_ serious objection to all kinds of ordinary Coal Cooking Stoves. The Cylinders are situated directly under the cover holes, and a fire may be made in one or both, thus adapting it for use either in winter or summer, with equal satistaction, besides effecting a great saving to fuel. I have aleo attached the PATENT TELESCOPI® OVEN to ajl my Elevated Oven Wood Stoves, such as the Waterloo, Niagara, Star, &c , causing the thousands using them to exclaim—My Stoves are worth TEN DOLLARS MORE than the same kind made by other foundries, The trade and retail purchasers will please bearin mind the fact that although a great advantage is claimed for my own @ven above all others, they cost no more, and being the sole manufacturer and patentee, no other f.undry can supply.
