A couple of sittings of egss, r a trio of fowl will be sufficient tn one vear to set a man up in trade with “yards of prize-winning | anc birds !’ I am not prepared to say post- tively that one dollar per bird or one Hlar per sitting is too low for good stock Put I do say that an immense amount of low grade stock is annually sold at these figures As a matter of dollar invested in poultry dollar’s worth—seldom rhaps this cheapen fact, one will bring a nore. In a sense, pt ing may be a good those of scanty means to make a start in something better than they have. not necessarily prove thing by enabling High prices d that the stock sold is of high quality. There is this much of proof about it; no one can obtain high prices who has not some just claim to such by higher grade, closer culling or fairer treatment. The fact that a man asks and secures high prices year after year is partial evi- dence that the price corresponds with the thing sold. It is well, then,to investi- rate and see whether such is the cas?. if you have the money can better afford to pay three dolla:s for a three-dollar bird than to péey one dollar for a bird worth only a third uch as the other. to spare you Still, if you have only three dollars to | in\ i 1y be better to invest the money in three one-dollar birds. You | f you ever begin, and a three-do rd and no mate for it will be of no use to you. Therefore, I am not sure but the three may be the right investment trusting to better times to get the finer bird another year. This is advisable only tn the event that you are anxious for the best and deter- mined to have it when able. If, how- ever, you are going to be satisfied with one-dollar fowls and to insist that yours are as good as else’s finer stock, don’t start at all. One of the most disheartening things is to see poor “fancy stock” with a satisfied owner. I have seen poultry exhibited at fairs which I would be ashamed to have on my farm, if I had not hope of doing better next year. I do not mean by this that my stock is better than that ex- ribited, because it probably is not, but I know the defects of mine, and instead of thrusting them into the face of a much suffering public at the fair, I am making my plans to secure improve- ment. Only for this I tolerate my pre- sent stock and as soon as I can get something better. must mak someone BLACKBERRIES. tochester, a paper was read by C. E. Chapman, Peruville, N. Y., on “One thousand dollars from an acre of black- berries.” Mr. Chapman said his at- tention was called to blackberry grow- ing by a newspaper article, and he re- solved to go into it, but did not know anything whatever of the requirements in the way of soil or varieties. He tought some plants where he could get them cheapest, and afterwards learned that the cheapest plants were some- times the dearest. A good many dig ur old plants from old plantations which were nearly worthless, and sold them for what they could get. After ¢x- perimenting for a great many years and buying his blackberries for family use, he finally succeeded in learning enough about the business to grow crops suc- cessfully. He had not yet got to where he produced at the rate of $500 worth from a measured one half acre, as did a neighbor. Part were sold at 15 cents per quart, but the greater portion at 10 cents. A single picking sold for $100 The first requisite in blackberry cul- ture is to have nice, mellow soil in 2 fine state of cultivation. Raw manure was not good. He had the best results where the ground was twice thoroughly manured with well-rotted manure, and cultivated in farm crops. Blackberries should be planted in rows 7 feet apart, on ground so rich that a solid row 4 feet wide could be produced. This made a close, hedge-like row to shade the fruit, and gave the actual conditions under which this fruit thrived best. He mulched with moist hay or straw on either side the bushes, and gave thor ough cultivation along the middle of the spaces. — FARM NOTES. Gardeners have faith in well-rotted manure ; why should not farmers ? A man who cannot be punctual in at tending to his work had no business in the dairy business. Keep all to Is under cover. It ts bet- ter to stack the hay out if there is not rcom to house both. There i ») need to drag mellow scil after clover seed has been sown in order to cover it. The rains will do this better than man can. Even the brush harrow often recommended for this purpose is worse than useless. On winter grain, a dragging of the hardened surface, to mellow it before sowing clover and grass seeds, will insure a better catch. H. Immendorf of Germany has reé- viewed the literature on the subject of saving the nitrogen of Yard manure, and concludes, according to the Expert- ment Station Record, that the prin- ciple cause of loses of combined nitro- gen in the ordinary method of Sandling manure is to be found in the volatiliza- tion of ammonia. The evolution of free nitrogen plays a comparatively insiz- nificant role. The evolution of ani- monia begins as soon as the manure is voided, and is especially rapid in the liquid excrement. A considerable lo~: of ammonia, as well as of gaseous nitro- gen, may also occur after the manure is thrown in the heap. Peaty or humus earth may replace with advantage a part at least of the straw generally used as an absorbent. The use of burnt lim2 or Thomas slag for the purpose of con- serving manure should be entirely dis- carded. est in the field.
