Jan. 2.--In its lead- ing editorial this morning, The Times, under the caption "Enforcing Peace," says "you are victorious in all thea- tres of war on land and sea," is the l{aiser's New Year’s greeting to his troops and seamen. He mlsinformed them. His victorious navy still lies imprisoned; its ,hands are tied and it is able only to kick out viclously with its submarines. If his navy is vic- torious, the Navy of Great Britain must be defeated but that defeated na- vy still rides the .seas unchecked. still holds the victorious German navy landlocked. The dream of whittling down the British navy by submarine attacks until the German fleet could sally forth and meet it on even terms has gone to join the last wreckage of German beliefs and ho hesies t e defensive before the big ones. its last attempt to break through the iron is steadily weakening and theirs grows stronger. So des ite the Kai D D which the war has made. As__ for. his victorious army it has roamed at ease through little' kingdoms and trod- --~.-~\~\-\- ,_-.-».~ ...-~ w»~m~_»* ~ WIRELESS UPERATUR. McLean, the wireless operator of the Canadian torpedo bout Grilsc. was among thearrlvals in the City by the' Carferry steamer yester-I day. He left by the afternoon train for Georgetown to visit his wife and_ family who reside there. Mr. Mc- Lean is looking none the worse after-I his terrible experience on the stomi-, tossed little war-craft. lt will _be remembered that the Grilse was gi-' yen up for lost and the families of all the crew received oflicialnotiiicationf of their death. Mr. McLean had. the novelty of being one of those rare personages who -have read the ao- count of their own death in the press, and carried with him yesterday a pa-_ per containing such a notice, which happily ,did not prove' to be a cc-rrect_ rc-port. The Grilse carried two wire-, loss operators and it was the junior( cnc, a lad of eighteen years, wllo lost nl.. life. -' I Without question the hurricane' which the staunch little craft passed tllrougll was about as severe as could be and never have men at sea boon closer to death than were the irallnnt _iackies of the Grilse. Mr. McLean informed the Guardian repor- ter that not one of them ever expec- tcd to survive the awful stc-rm. A slillht idea of the terrible condition of affairs may be realized when it is sta- ted that the torpedo boat listed to the- oxtent of ninety degrees and at times sho ploughed her way completely sub- merged. lt was her tanks and -the wonderful turbine engines working undnr water, which with the wonderful work of the crew, saved the vessel. So great was the lnrush oi water when the man-hatch was car rled away that in a. short time' there was a depth- of six feet of water in the engine room; while in the com- panion way the men were compelled to wade breast high in water. A pump lashed to the steam pipes and the crew bailing incessantly with jam jars-these were the means employed to keep down the water. The gale's awful velocity was mark- ed_by the loss of s torpedo, which was torn away from its strong fastening; boats and life rafts were' swept away; the mainmast was broken off comple- tely -. and the wireless apparatus put out of commission; the funnels bent in ami the bridge broken and everything movable, including six of the crew, carried away. Most of the members c~f the crew who went over- board were lost while trying to bat- ten down a covering over the hatch- way in order to save the ship. Mr. McLean states that the report that the Chief Engineer jumped overboard is not true‘. The Grilse had a crew of fortyllve all told. She- is 210 feet long. Mr. McLean pays great tri- bute to ller colnmandcr. Capt. Win- gate, R. N. lt., for his coolness and bravery in every phase' ot’ an awful situntioll. The Grllsc' was on her way to Bermuda when she was over taken by _nhe hurricane. She was about as near to Ne'w York as to Ha iifax when it swept down upon her. it will be some time before she is ready to go to sea again. .-.- -_-_-_-_-_-_-_»_-_~:_-V._._~_s_____s_-_-Y-_-_-_-_-_-_»_~V-_-_-;;_., , N . _-,__ - -_-_-_-_-_-V-V-_-_-_-: ,,,_-Y-_-_-,_-_-,__ ,~_»_ _»_~_-_~_-_~,- _- ,- FEAlllTli[ _HIiL100A.UST _ , ill Quinta cnrvnll .
